[quote]Vacant U.S. House seats are filled through special elections called by state governors, as mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution. These elections occur following a resignation, death, or expulsion, with the newly elected member serving the remainder of the unexpired term. States set their own timelines for these special elections, which often coincide with existing local elections to save costs.

My condolences go out to his family, and except in very rare occasions I will not celebrate someone's death. But he was another example of the need for term/age limits in Congress. Fell asleep early on during the SOTU address, had to be pushed in a wheelchair into the state capitol building to sign the paperwork to run again this year. He was well past the time of needing to stay home with his family.

Meanwhile Mitch McConnell is basically "Bernie Goes To Washington" and Trump is quite literally the oldest president in US history.

Keep doing the same shite over and over again expecting different results.

Trump's age is immaterial. He's getting shite done, unlike every other desiccated husk in DC.

I would say, I don’t think I would vote for someone to Congress, who’s served that long and no longer represents the majority of constituents.

I think most people would agree unless that candidate was the only option available without crossing party lines. The majority of Democrats will not vote for anyone with a R by their names (and vice versa) regardless of the candidate's age.

eta: None of this would be an issue if we had term limits. It's long past due to have term limits in congress.

We should all be well aware that this is not the practice in every state for every House seat that is vacated.

It never ceases to amaze me that some of you think governors can appoint members of the House in ANY state. EVERY House vacancy requires an election.

Senate vacancies vary by state. House vacancies fricking don’t. Jesus Christ…

Fine, then he should simply not call a special election and let this ride till the midterms. Happy now?

You people who act like the governor can do nothing in these situations are the actual problem.

Can you provide any example of when a House seat was filled without having a special election?

Note: the rules for Senators are different

It's not so much age limits but term limits. While having people in advanced age may not be ideal.

Trumps political career has spanned appr 10 years with 6 being in office.

Scott started in 1975 in state legislature and Congress since 2003. A fifty year career in nothing but legislation.

We should also increase the minimum age of reps and senators, because young people don't have the wisdom and life experience to make decisions affecting 300 million people.

Let's prevent them from voting for the same reason.

He'll still be able to vote, though. (D)efinitely.
