Free Speech Alley at LSU

When I was going to LSU back in the early nineties, they had what was called Free Speech Alley. People would stand near a crowded walkway and speak or shout out things for those walking by to hear. Many times it was religious or controversial.
I remember I had an English professor, who was clearly gay, and he walked by one of these sidewalk preachers and they openly called him out for his homosexuality. I was embarrassed for the professor at the time, and still to this day, I don’t think publicly calling someone out about his lifestyle or sin is the way to go about it. But, I remember the professor never said anything back, bowed his head, and walked off as the student preacher continued hurling admonishments.
One, is there still such a thing as Free Speech Alley on the campus.
And two, how do you think the scenario I retold would play out today?

In the late 80s I briefly attended LSU before transferring out of state to finish school. Remember FSA well. Probably long gone now.

It was still there from 99-03.
Don’t know about today, but I tend to doubt that free speech alley exists anymore, which if correct, is quite sad. I loved heckling those religious guys back.
I also thought it was strange that there was a specific place for free speech on campus, as if the rest of campus was controlled speech. The “free speech” had to be contained to the “alley”.

It was there in the mid 2000s when I was helping students form conservative groups to counter the left’s indoctrination.

Brother Jed and Sister Cindy used to call out all the whores and whoremongers.

2008-2014, FSA was still alive and thriving. It’s where the minority viewpoint went to screech - and conservatives and the religious right are very much the minority viewpoint of modern college campuses.
I remember the fire and brimstone preacher, some ultra pro-life girl (ended up being a year behind me in law school), the grandpa who sat quietly reading a book and invited people (via a sign) to talk about Jesus, some kid on a unicycle, the Ben Haas flag burning incident, and various other assorted foolishness tied to elections/politics during that time.

Nothing like convincing people to change their ways by throwing insults at them. Pretty good chance they weren’t students as well.

“And you will burn in the lake of FIRE!”
They came to Auburn every spring.
It was weird, but the crowd was hilarious.

They should have worked the exchanges on frat row. Damned shame kids these days will never know about events like South Seas or the great TKE donut incident circa 1988.

LSU put a stop to free speech. LSU doesn't approve of or allow free speech.

If I’m thinking of the same incident, that was the Dekes (and the Kappas).

I graduated in 2016. We had Free Speech alley too. I didn’t partake in anything, but to say it’s Free Speech is a stretch. I noticed a trend towards the far left during my final semesters. Colleges always lean left, but this was different.

I got a signed copy of Brother Jed's book. Dude used to have seizures up there on the bench as he called out the fornicators, blasphemers and other hell bound sinners.

I finished with LSU in 1999 and FSA was alive and well. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve been told I was going to hell in FSA. A lot of times it was just a table with people handing out literature of some kind or trying to get you to sign a petition. Still they had some interesting things from time to time going on there.
I couldn’t tell you now if they still have it. I haven’t set foot on the campus in well over a decade. I imagine if they do it certainly wouldn’t be the same.

I think we had the same professor. I believe he quit not long after.
If LSU still allows it…they probably have trannys shaming straight people and blue haired girls with hog rings in their nose shaming sorority girls. Or…it’s all about racism.

Free Speech Alley dates back to at least the 1970s when David Duke was a regular. Occasionally someone would make intelligent points. You can tell when this happened because the crowd was small and quiet.
But the nut nut jobs could draw crowds that were loud and having fun. Society demanded thick skin and actual tolerance back then because there were no safe spaces, trigger warnings, or words that could not be said. Actual freedom on campus.

FSA took a hard left turn in 2017. It was mostly Baby killers, Trigglypuff, and Pantifa.

Same. It was around the 2014 midterms when it started to shift hard left.
