Four members of U.S. Congress, including House Armed Services Committee ranking member Mac Thornberry, sent a letter to President Donald Trump on Thursday urging him to move forward with a $10 billion cloud contract with the Department of Defense.

The letter comes after Trump said his administration was looking closely at Amazon.com’s bid on the cloud contract after getting complaints from other tech companies.

The contract called the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) has been caught up in controversy after Oracle Corp , a competitor, expressed concern about the role of a former Amazon employee who worked on the project until recusing himself, then later left the Defense Department and returned to Amazon Web Services.

Despite the fact that these lawmakers are Republicans, I tend to side with the President. Another massive project for Amazon? The company is starting to deliver poor service at some very basic levels. Do we just want to trust them with a key national security project?

I agree that Amazon doesn't need any government help. But explain this statement please.

Gladly!

We are Prime members. Service and delivery have gone downhill fast in the past 2-3 months. Just this week, on 2 separate occasions, I have had to spend way too much time on chat/phone with them about what should have been routine orders and deliveries.

A one-book order shipping to FL was delayed (with no explanation) and would have taken over a week to arrive, at least 3 days longer than originally advertised. When I called to cancel the order I was told that, since the order was already shipped, I had to call the carrier and tell them to return the package to the sender. I said absolutely not, it is not my responsibility to make sure what I paid for is delivered.

They claimed a package was delivered when it was not. They had no picture or other proof of delivery. Still, I had to spend over half hour on the phone with 3 different individuals to get them to issue a refund. I went and purchased the item at a local store.

We get some items on 'subscribe and save.' In theory, dates of delivery are flexible and I get to adjust them as needed. On a couple of occasions they delivered 10 days early, and we had to pay someone to go to the house and bring the items into the house because we were away.

And so on......

Not entirely sure what you're referring to but no, so very, very far from your description.

Amazon continually misses shipping delivery dates for me. 2 day shipping is a pipe dream anymore. It always shows up a day late.

I guess this can be annoying. I have my Amazon set up for prime day so all my stuff shows up once a week.

Even so, free two or three day shipping is really nothing to complain about. It shows how greedy and crazy Americans are. We're drunk on the easy life. Even massive convenience isn't enough anymore.

It isn’t free and expecting a service to deliver what they claim is neither greedy nor crazy.

vs Microsoft?
That's a wash.

The question is whether Amazon gamed the process and might actually not be the best option for DOD. If AMZ is the best B4B, they should get the contract.

Have you guys used the Weather Channel app lately? It sucks big fat donkey balls and that is IBM. Oracle also sucks donkey balls. Amazon and Microsoft are the best equipped at handling the contract and executing it best.

When it comes to a national security and a project like this, why is it even going to the private sector?

Did Reality Winner teach you nothing, DOD??

because the govt sucks at doing stuff like this. Private sector is already doing it. It would take 5 years for the government to just organize and hire a management team just to figure out how to hire the people that need to build the servers and another 5 years for them to get that done and another 5 years to have it up an running. shite i'm a liberal and know how inefficient government is.

Then government should hire talent away from the companies rather than outsource. Government employees should be handling this given its involvement with national security.

Maybe I’m an anomaly, but I’ve not only started getting the one-day shipping, items that I’ve selected as “no rush,” usually estimated around a week at checkout, have come in just 2 days.
