You don't need extremely large data centers for AI development.
Computers went microscopic in development and now we need HUGE centers.
How big would these things be with the old tube technology?

That should have been done a decade ago. Its too late. This is in some ways worse than the nuclear arms race. At least we understood how they work and had a measure of control along with MAD theory keeping everyone in check
Ask anyone in cutting edge AI research of neural networks ....they widely agree that their mechanistic understanding of large neural networks is profoundly limited, with some top researchers informally estimating they understand only about 3% of how these systems function.

Data Centers are so great, that cities and these companies have to have secret meetings and deals to get them put in.

This ^^^^ is what is going on in the KC metro where there are several huge data centers currently under construction. The other issue is the infrastructure for these huge data centers, in many cases the water and electricity use by huge data centers are driving utility costs up for local residents.

The scale of the new ones is massive and all taxpayer funded via hundreds of billions of dollars worth of tax abatements and because they need vast amounts of electricity requiring infrastructure upgrades paid for by all the ratepayers. Another angle is that the future of data centers in 3-5 years will likely move away from the giant hyperscale towards more mid-scale centers and if they leave before the contract agreement re tax abatements is up...the taxpayers are left on the hook to pay for it all.

They've already built quite a few and they're pushing to build more hyperscale centers. Our electric rates have already gone up quite a bit.

Second Largest US Grid Operator Proposes Reliability Rules For Data Centers

I'd be OK with building data centers if it also came with ending the H1-B and any similar immigration plan/loophole. You cant sit there and say it will decimate jobs while importing a bunch of frickin pajeets to do what jobs are left

Why are data centers, which are quiet and clean compared to almost any kind of mill or factory, always singled out?

You don’t think there are secret meetings and deals when an automotive manufacturer is shopping around for a new plant location? Or a steel mill?
