For Those Of You Opposed To Data Centers, What Is Your Plan?

Are you opposed to the further development of computing and AI and your opposition to data centers is a way to stop that development?
Or are you just NIMBYs?

These are the people who don’t realize that we already have 1000’s of DCs up and running. Only the scale and efficiency are new.

Did you see tliab proposed a bill to not have AI centers on any federal land. Someone forgot to tell her there are hundreds already on federal land, the computer she had the chinese lobbyists write the bill on is probably attached to an ai center on federal land.

Strawman argument.
That's a false choice. It is entirely reasonable to support innovation while opposing the specific, localized costs of massive server hubs. One can support AI development while simultaneously demanding grid stability, consumer rate protections, and environmental accountability from the corporations building them. You're conflating infrastructure accountability with being 'anti-tech', and that misses the broader conversation happening nationwide.

I don’t believe I am educated enough to know whether I truly oppose NEW data centers, and I can blame myself to a certain extent just for not being aware. But it also seems like the recent surge in new, planned, approved data centers has been more hushed and including more NDA’s than conventional commercial real estate.
It feels like the process is well underway before the public gets notice of it. But again, I have not done a lot of research on the issue.
But to answer your question bluntly, I don’t have a plan.

I am not opposed to data centers at all.
But I do think if they need to bring their own power or pay for more power stations to offset what they will be using.
Supply and demand applies to electricity.
There is no world where a massive consumer (demand) for electricity does not impact and existing market with a fixed supply.
But that is a solvable problem.

The bottleneck in AI training is not with data amounts, unless you are talking about a lack of high-quality data that usually needs to be prepped and cleaned in some way.
I think the biggest thing that can come out of this is we will see a bigger push for nuclear power to meet the needs.

What's needed and what requires so much power/water is the computing and having thousands of GPUs talking to each other and pushing them through with enough speed to train in a decent amount of time.
