But it's doing exactly what the code says it should be doing by flying upside down?

It is a sign of extreme distress in instances of threats to life or property. An election result does not qualify.

According to the flag code, its a sign of extreme distress.

More commonly in the real world it is done as a sign of disrespect.

Sadly, your first option that you noted will be the justification. I would argue that the people that “will be” doing this typically love the flag and what it (used to) represent(s).

An illegitimate President certainly warrants a distress signal

Do you have a link to that language or is that just your interpretation?

Even if you do have a link, my money is my property, the lives of our servicemen are lives, and at the very least those two are under duress with the incoming administration.

First I’ve heard of it.

Our MAGA neighbor has had his upside down off and on since November.

And on this cold gray day with snowflakes flying about like some disgruntled god's dandruff, his flag is upside down again.

Our flag holder got bent so we had to take ours inside.

It’s in the flag code. Google it.

Say that all you want. It will only be seen by everyone viewing it as a sign of disrespect, and a temper tantrum about the election. I don’t care what you do with your flag, just telling you that not liking an election result is not “distress”.

There have been a couple around my house upside down the last couple of weeks. AT least one was upside down during the capital protests.

I flew a flag outside my business for years but one evening a policeman entered our lobby and told my receptionist that our flag was out after dark and was not lit up as required. I went outside with him and of course the lights were on...he was of the opinion it wasn't lit up enough and we were in violation of a local ordinance. I didn't debate it with him, simply took it down and it never went back up again. I do not know if he was right or wrong but I wasn't willing to put up with the police either way. This was in Clarke County, Georgia and was an Athens police officer....I have no idea if there is actually an ordinance or not but it wasn't worth the effort of running afoul of the police, in my opinion.

Seems appropriate for this occasion.

Its probably in the flag code, but that doesn’t have the force of law. No one can punish you for displaying it however you want.

"Not liking an election result" as you put it is quite the simplification of the reasoning.

Should we be surprised considering these folks wear the US flag as a bathing suit, fly it with Trumps picture pasted over top of it, and/or use it to beat police with.

This originated as a maritime distress signal. In theory an upside-down flag is a sign that there’s an emergency and you need assistance. Basically the same meaning as firing flares, flashing S.O.S., etc.

It has become a political statement. I don’t really like it personally but as long as it’s not on a boat, in a combat area, etc... it’s probably not hurting anyone.

USCG or WL&F may take issue if someone flies an upside down flag on a boat.

ETA: The exact text from the flag code is:
quote:

(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

An election result is not extreme distress to life or property, which is what the upside down flag signifies.

It’s absolutely meant as a sign of disrespect/‘not my President’ etc.

Election result?

It's bigger than a damn election result. There was clearly very strange things going on leading up to and during this election.

You liberals do what you do best and that's focus in on the spilled milk on the floor and ignore the house burning down.

If the last 4 years and specifically the last 4-5 months hasn't shown you that our government is no longer serving the people then you're blind or more likely just ignoring it because you're just happy Trumps gone.

The Republican's are just as much at fault as the Democrats for creating this shite show and Trump didn't help it with his blowhard attitude. But if you think this is about just an election you're willfully ignorant.

Got to say, as a conservative who has gone through many elections, that would be really sad to see.

Agree, the issue is less with the election result as it is with election process.
