Now index for inflation back to 1976 and tell us how mean ole orange man ruined housing.
That was already factored in dumbfrick.
If you want to go nominal the average 1976 house sold for less than $30/sqft.
Bards numbers aren't even remotely correct anyway (shocker).
in 1976, the average house was 1700 sqft, not 1500. And today's houses are 2,400 sqft, not 2,100.
Average price per square foot today is $224. Average price per square foot in 1976 was (INFLATION ADJUSTED) ~$175.
So the inflation adjusted difference between 1976 and 2026 is 28% higher today.

I wonder if it has anything with "tax cuts" while increasing spending at the same time causing inflation.
Nah, that can't be it. Trump could never be at fault. It's a good thing we attacked the conservative members of congress who tried to vote against it.

Will voters consider the last 50 years?
Of course not. Voters are generally morons. They think the ALL-TIME low rates for Covid were normal. The fact is inflation is just fine. The dems and the OMB crowd are loving this. They can bash Trump and have low inflation. All because most voters are morons.

You are correct. Unfortunately, many on this board are economically ignorant and think raising rates will simultaneously lower prices AND create economic growth. It will do neither. Raising rates will increase the interest on the debt, will not lower the debt, and will have zero impact on the supply of oil. But again, it hurts Trump so it’s “good” by default

This is the same stupid mistake the Fed took back in 1973, when the Fed tried exactly this.
You left out the part where the Fed in 1973 actually did the complete opposite of what you posted and stopped raising rates and cut them too early because they were actually scared of causing a recession and they caused the stagflation they were actually trying to avoid.

Inflation is fine. And revenues were at all time highs following the tax cuts. We know you leftists want higher taxes. But your premise is one based in complete ignorance.

I thought “libertarians” were against higher taxes? Imagine cheering higher taxes

Fed Rule #1. Whenever the GOP is in charge, raise the rates.
Fed Rule #2. Whenever the Democrat is in charge, go to QE if you must.

We need voters to vote R.
But I’ve been told over and over here that my vote isn’t needed.
Well…

The lesson from the early to mid 70s is not "dont raise rates" its "don't try to stimulate the economy while inflation is a threat"
If you want to criticize the Fed the criticism should be the increase should have been half a point.
Edit - stout beat me to it

its the inflation driven by gas and diesel prices.
And whose fault is that?

This will certainly lower gas prices

This will do nothing to correct the housing market
Except the fact that many markets have already entered a correction and have seen price decreases? How do you explain that?
quote:
the only thing higher rates will accomplish is further locking out of the market potential buyers
They have been locked out and it wasn't just because of rates. The biggest issue is very simple and that is that wage growth was unable to keep up with housing inflation for years.
quote:
Lowering rates would allow more potential buyers the opportunity to possibly afford a house, especially young buyers.
See above
quote:
so again why are you cheering the demise of the nation just so you can buy cheaper investment properties?
You are so hyperbolic. Jesus...

I support 0 taxes.
But it has to come with less spending, not an increase in spending. Otherwise it leads to high inflation.
The only way to offset the inflation is with higher rates. Which was the predictable response and what we see now.
This is why the BBB was a piece of shite bill.

Average home size in 76 was closer to 1700/sqft according to the census bureau.
Can you link that for me? Everything I've found bounces from 1,500-1,660.
Farm Bureau - 1,500sqft
Windmere - 1,660sqft
AEI - 1,660sqft

Has Trump commented yet?
I can hear it already. ..."Well we're really disappointed. I said a few days ago that we expected them to drop and that we should have the lowest interest rates in the world. I don't know. Maybe we need to rethink Warsh's appointment".

Monetary policy cannot drill oil or reopen Hormuz. If energy stays high because of war and refining/diesel bottlenecks, hiking mainly squeezes housing, credit cards, autos, and investment. That can slow growth without bringing gasoline down. That is the classic supply-shock trap: tighter policy fights the part of inflation it can influence (demand) and leaves the part it cannot (energy) in place. If they keep hiking from here while diesel keeps feeding into food and goods, you get “stagflation-lite”
