re: Feds Raise Rates a Quarter Point

Whether the Fed cut rates or didn’t cut rates in 73’ is irrelevant. By the end of the Carter administration they were double digit, gas prices were high, and economic growth was anemic. The US economy was much different during the 50’s and 60’s when the average consumer wasn’t swimming in debt just to survive. The US national debt was nonexistent. We now owe 40 trillion in debt and the average American has 10k in cc debt, sustained higher rates now would crush the American consumer not correct decades of deficit spending

Except for the fact that we not only have beaten expectations but also have had to revise a report or two up from the previously reported numbers?

When will we see this high inflation? Is being below historical averages high to you?

He absolutely is. No way you can hope the DSA wins and not be a leftist.

He’s not but I understand that assigning beliefs to others here is commonplace.
And who is we?
Several of the clasping seals say things like “
We all know” this or that
I’ve wondered who we are and all is just laughable.

tighter policy fights the part of inflation it can influence (demand) and leaves the part it cannot (energy) in place. If they keep hiking from here while diesel keeps feeding into food and goods, you get “stagflation-lite”
FWIW, I was hoping for another can kick down the road and was hoping Trump figured a way out of the war before the next meeting. I am not cheering the hike on, but I don't think it is the end of the world yet.
Now, if they erase all of last year's hikes as many are predicting, then I think we will have more reason to fear stagflation.

Trump had an uncle that was a professor at a prestigious school and Trump said he was a genius. Yesterday or maybe the day before, he went on to say he inherited his uncle’s genius genes.

anyone crying over gas is poor/petty. we had these prices under W. be glad gas has not risen like the costs of other goods over time. it could be way higher if not a supply and demand commodity.
the issue is during biden's regime and the huge increase for certain goods and services of which many have not went down post covid with supply chain issues amongt other issues.
trump has to get inflation down to where he had it first term. biden exploded it and left a shitshow.

It is relevant - 73-74 is a cautionary tale and it explains why the Fed is insistent on maintaining the 2% goal. You dont clamp down on that and then the economy slows there isn't much to be done unless you do what volker had to do - take rates to relatively astronomical levels and play a huge role in causing a recession.
Economy is strong now - the Fed should be more active in controlling inflation

gas prices were high
What gets me, when comparing now to 1973, is that we were way more dependent on foreign oil in 1973 than we are now which is a huge driver of what caused the panic and stagflation.
Too bad being the world’s top oil producer doesn't mean we get a domestic discount.

Tell me this, sustained inflation in the US is debt driven. What does increasing the interest rate on that debt accomplish?

It won't let me link the pdf directly.
Type in average square footage of home 1976 census into google and click the census links in the AI overview. New houses in 1976 averaged 1700/sqft.

June and July have both been revised up
We don't know yet if August will be revised up as well, but I think the Fed raising rates today is a good indicator of which way it will go.
