New York City property owner recently ended up in handcuffs following a fiery standoff with alleged squatters who she has been trying to boot from her family’s home, tense footage shows.

Adele Andaloro, 47, was nabbed after changing the locks last month on the $1 million home in Flushing, Queens, that she says she inherited from her parents when they died, AB C’s Eyewitness News reported.

“It’s enraging,” the homeowner said of the squatter saga. “It’s not fair that I, as the homeowner, have to be going through this."

Andaloro claims the ordeal erupted when she started the process of trying to sell the home last month but realized squatters had moved in — and brazenly replaced the entire front door and locks.

In New York City, a person can claim “squatter’s rights” after just 30 days of living at a property.

Under the law, it is illegal for the homeowner to change the locks, turn off the utilities, or remove the belongings of the “tenants” from the property.

“By the time someone does their investigation, their work, and their job, it will be over 30 days and this man will still be in my home,” Andaloro said.

“I’m really fearful that these people are going to get away with stealing my home,” she added. NY Post

How in the heck is this even allowed? How will the mortgage company respond if this house is mortgaged?

Surely people have recourse.

It's a good thing I don't live in NY. I'm a bit of an a-hole about what's mine is mine and I'll do with it as I damn well please. These squatters would be reported MIA if this was my property.

There's a new tool. The landlord can pay a guy $300 and give him a free one month lease on the property and a key. He goes in and introduces himself to the squatters showing the legal lease.
He becomes a total a-hole and the squatters can't call the cops because he's legal and they aren't. They leave.

$1 million home in Flushing, Queens

So what is that, like basically an efficiency with 1 bedroom?

I agree. I hope you don't lose what your parents worked so hard to obtain and keep and then you rightfully inherited. I truly do.

But it's New York. You choose to live there. They'll probably say, "Well, you're just selling it anyway, so they can have it because they need it more than you."

Yeah, that's pretty fricked up. A really nice little racket for legal confiscated and redistribution if you ask me.

Even in my little town in Oklahoma my coworker has a second home he inherited that he intends to fix up, and it took him over 90 days to get a couple homeless meth head squatters out of there after he first discovered them living there. In the end they were taken to jail, but they were immediately released after being booked.

You can banish a weapon in your own home if threatened? Correct? Breaking and entering on the squatters part?

law says they can only go after the debtor, not the squatter, so if the squatter is the debtor, then they cant do anything but put a lien on it

nope, they passed laws to give squatters all the rights, thats why i refuse to rent out my house, i rather it be vacant then try to fight to get someone evicted from it

You would think, in the land of wise-guys, the one month free lease part wouldn't be needed.
