I'm really glad this is getting a lot of national media attention now. It's something that's bothered me for a long time.

your dreaming if you think this will get covered as a general example of militarization of media. Some will sure, but it will be spun as a disproportionate response driven by racism.

Hey, we got one of those tanks in Bossier (sheriff's dept) two years ago. Crime is very low in Bossier. So why the purchase? The parish is awash in tax revenue and the dept has to spend money to keep their budget as is.

On the other side of the river Shreveport is very high crime and the police can barely afford bullets.

That whole piece by Maher was excellent.

has the key contents of all Maher content:

1) Make a reference to him smoking pot because you know he is cool because he does that.

2) A little race baiting at the end.

Takes away from a lot of decent points he made

Are some of these obtained with Federal grants?

Its almost all funded by the feds. One small rural dept got 20 colt 9mm SMG's for $50 a piece.

It's not going to get better anytime soon, I'm afraid. I see it daily. The police departments go all post-apocalyptic because they have to justify their budgets. So, I hope you don't have a dime bag in your briefcase, because you might wake up one morning with a pistol grip pump shotgun in your face, a flash bang grenade in your child's room, and a dead labrador.

That's a good reason for us to protect the border.

Instead, we leave the border open and give middle American policemen tanks.

Makes perfect sense if you want an excuse to militarize the police and desensitize people to martial law.

Step 1A - Ban Guns
Step 1B - Give law enforcement unprecedented levels of firepower
Step 1C - Open the border, both as an excuse for more law enforcement firepower and as a way to get more low-info voters

Step 2 - Boots on necks everywhere

He went on a very long diatribe about how they need these tanks, weapons, body armor, etc. to fight violent drug gangs. He went on to say that he wasn't in a position to tell us about specifics of all the dangerous Mexican gangs coming in La., but assured us that this equipment was saving our lives. He ended his rant by basically insulting both of us for not knowing what we were talking about and goading us to join the force if we dared.

Who said cops can't be brainwashed by their department heads, like the rest of the US citizens, into believing that they need it for this or that but really it's actually to keep the US citizens in check. I have a close relative that is a pilot and sniper for the LA State Police and he is as conservative as they come but I notice that he is very naive about what is really going on.

This guy is also very conservative and a really good Christian man. I know him well from past church activities and his sons would always play with mine growing up. He just seems bent on the idea that the police need all of these toys to fight drug wars.

Actually, this admin has shifted the majority of Immigration prevention to the border and away from interior enforcement, well ahead of the childrens' crusades.
