I voted for the crook, while my stomach turned.
The damage done by a duke administration would be far worse & poison LA's reputation far longer.
It was crazy time.
Used to have the "vote for the crook, it's important" bumper sticker!
Truth is, it's a very sad commentary on our state politicians that voting for a known crook who enriched himself with taxpayer money was the best choice.

The biggest failure and tragedy in that race was Buddy Roemer completely betraying everything he ran on and everyone that voted for him.

It pissed people off so much to the point where they found themselves in a shitty matchup of the racist vs the crook for the runoff.

frick Roemer for making it possible for a Nazi a-hole to be conservative's candidate against the liberal crook.

frick David Duke for running and ruining conservative's best chance to keep the liberal crook out of the Governor's mansion.

If Edwards had lost he wouldn't have gone to prison. So, both got what they deserved.

It is Romer's fault that Duke made that runoff. Romer acted like he was gonna be crowned and campaigned little at all until the last 2 weeks.

I really cannot think of anything politically worse for the state of LA than to have elected David Duke governor. He is a despicable human being. He was at LSU when I was and often walked around in a Nazi uniform. It distresses me that he could even get 43% of the vote.

I had a friend that lived in Washington D.C. call me up, and said "I think I am pretty intelligent, but you have to explain this to me, you had a incumbent Governor that had not done anything unethical, was basically liked by most, but was beaten in a election by a known criminal, and a Klu Klux Xlan wizard, how is that possible, what is wrong with LA?"

Frick Curley Hallman.

This is the correct response.

Go read “Cross to Bear” by John Maginnis. It’s entire book dedicated to that race.

A testament to the shittiness of Edwards, not the popularity of Duke.

virtually all votes for Duke were Anti-Edwards votes.

Nobody thought the Grand Wizard would win.

I was alive and politically active but didn't pay attention to Louisiana politics. That having been said, I learned to essentially disregard all charges of racism and antisemitism that get media coverage after they smeared Pat Buchanan during his campaign for being critical of Goldman Sachs.

I was at LSU during this circus. Voted for Duke. Far from an easy decision.

Only “good” part about that time was to sit and watch the whiny lefties scream at everyone who passed through, or gathered at Free Speech Alley.

I am curious if Free Speech Alley is still a thing?

For those youngsters in the audience, this was an actual bumper sticker making the rounds.

I see my post got five down-votes as of this writing, but no actual written responses. Whoever you down-voters are, why not have the balls to put down in writing why you down-voted my post? Is it because you're too ashamed to admit that either you, your fathers, uncles or grandfathers actually voted for that neo-Nazi pos, David Duke?

When Layne Staley said something mildly disparaging about Duke when his band opened for Van Halen, he got booed by mostly the whole crowd at the Centroplex.

Yep. A sad comment on Louisiana at the time. David Duke brought out a lot of closet racists back then. Isn't it odd that within a few years of the election and even still today, one can hardly find any of those pos Duke supporters who'll have the balls to admit they voted for him?
