It really was sad. Ironically, Duke's voting record always showed he was far more conservative with his votes in comparison to EWE. He was just as racist as EWE was. They both were sad choices for us.

I always believed the popularity of Reagan was the x factor that helped Roemer defeat Edwards who was running for re election

IMO, Reagan didn’t play that big of a role. For one thing, Roemer was a Democrat when he won the race. The Roemer race of 1987 was something to see. He literally came out of nowhere and his campaign caught on fire at the exact right time.

Roemer’s victory was a product of what was going on in Louisiana. Louisiana was in an economic depression due to the collapse in oil prices. Unemployment was in the high teens or more in some parishes. People wanted a change.

It was embarrassing to the state of Louisiana. I knew lots of people that said they just wasn't going to vote. I knew I had to vote for beat of the worst, which was Edwards.

I voted for the Klucker. I was 24 and had spent time around Edwards so I knew he was just as big of a racist as Duke.

My family hated Edwards.

All I remember was going into Roemer's HQ with my mom a couple of times.

First governor’s race I voted in.

Voted for the crook.

The whole deal was pretty much the death knell for the state, with what EWE pulled thereafter.

Sad

Basically the same as 2016 POTUS election, except the Hillary in this scenario won

I voted for Duke, wasn't a fan of his past but he was conservative and Edwards was just going to give away free stuff for votes.

Duke's bias would be neutered so he was no harm other than being a troll IMO, Edwards was experienced at stealing while in office and giving everything away for votes.

Too bad that's the only choices we had at the time, like it or not, or can't face the truth, that was the bottom line for that election.

David Duke is the exact man whom most Democrats believe Trump to be.

Worrying, most of all. Louisiana would have been totally disgraced in the eyes of the nation and world had Duke been elected. What was and is still sad is that 55 to 60 percent of the white voters voted for a neo-Nazi pos in the governor's race AND in the U.S. Senate race before that. One can look to that statistic to explain much of Louisiana's disfunction over the last 25+ years, that the majority of white voters thought that a racist, neo-Nazi POS should be their Governor. It says a lot about the mentality of many of the white voters in Louisiana at the time. And one funny/odd thing about it all was that within a few years afterward, you could hardly find anyone in Louisiana who would admit to voting for David Duke. I guess they didn't have the courage of their convictions and went back to hiding their racist views in the closet where they'd been before the advent of David Duke.

ETA: I will always consider the Republican woman operative (can't remember her name) who recorded David Duke making his real feelings about race known, and then gave the recording to the press, a real hero. David Duke was close to winning that race and when that recording came out, it stuck a pin into his campaign and showed everyone who he truly was. Sadly, this hero woman came to a sad end later in life and she has since passed away. But she did this state a great service.

I was 17 and payed a lot of attention to the race. I’m thankful I didn’t have to pul a lever in that one, but would have voted for Edwards if I’dve had to vote.

The wildest part of that election was Duke being endorsed by James Meredith... the Civil Rights icon that integrates Ole Miss.

I knew 2 things.
If Edwards was elected he would steal from the state and sell pardons. The state would be embarrassed.

If Duke was elected, the KKK would NOT be goose stepping down the street, the state would be embarrassed, but DD couldn’t steal a penny without being caught.

I voted for Duke, and vomited in my mouth.

Edwards stole, sold pardons, got caught, and went to trial again. Louisiana was embarrassed. BUT, miracle of miracles, EWE was found guilty and went to prison!

Maybe EWE should have voted DD and stayed a non-felon!

I voted for Edwards.

Years later I saw Duke playing at the craps table right along side a few black guys at Paragon around midnight. Back then it was the Grand Casino. I don't think many people recognized him. But I saw it with my own eyes.

Sometimes I wonder how much of it is an act.

Since James Meredith became a Republican well before that, it doesn't surprise me that he endorsed Duke. All that was after he benefited from the civil rights movement, sort of like Clarence Thomas. Guess they didn't need the civil rights movement after they got theirs.
