Easily the number one thing that’s holding Japan back from becoming a modern country

is it’s complete lack of diversity.

Ethnic groups of Japan

quote:

After the demise of the multi-ethnic Empire of Japan in 1945, successive governments had forged a single Japanese identity by advocating monoculturalism and denying the existence of more than one ethnic group in Japan.[7] It was not until 2019 when the Japanese parliament passed an act to recognize the Ainu people to be indigenous.[8][9] However, the notion of ethnic homogeneity was so ingrained in Japan, to which the former Prime Minister Taro Aso (1940-), in 2020, notably claimed in an election campaign speech that “No other country but this one has lasted for as long as 2,000 years with one language, one ethnic group and one dynasty”.[7]

Think about the amount of technological advancement they’re missing out on by for instance not having many Japanese African Americans or LGBT+ celebrations.

Reject modernity. Embrace tradition.

The Japanese are on to something

But I think we've got to acknowledge that being an extremely closed nation does make your culture weird as hell.

Probably a trade off I'd take

On an unrelated topic AOC urges Japan to get woke:

quote:

U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pressed her Japanese counterparts to move forward on LGBT rights ahead of the Group of Seven summit in May,

“In that context, I think it’s critical that Japan takes steps to move toward recognition of LGBT communities broadly, not just marriage equality.”

Japan's anti-diversity is rooted in establishment anti-Christianity not anti SJW ism. They were a highly Christian nation until WW2 and would be easily converted without de facto state atheism and isolation.

I would consider Japan the most modern country in the world. At the very least top 5.

Japan does have serious cost of living and age of population issues. Their economic woes have made pursuing a family virtually unaffordable. I don’t know what the solution is. Importing immigrants could help the worker:retiree ratio and increase fertility rates, but it would also depress wages, further exacerbating unemployment and stagflation.

I think population woes are largely overstated. Between automation and AI, countries won't need the large workforces they currently need.

There's definitely not state Shinto. The programming and education is atheistic and most of the populace now is.

You can't tell that to most on this board. If you don't practice their chosen religion, you're a pagan.

I mean, they are greatly sagging for real under the same things this board claims to hate the most - massive federal debt. It's such a wet blanket - along with their too-aged population - that they've essentially had deflation/no growth for 3 decades. The Nikkei isn't even up 100% in 33 years!

Also, they're young dudes aren't interested in sex.

They get a lot of stuff right, but they've got plenty wrong.

And yet they seem to be doing just fricking fine. How about letting a sovereign country do as they please?

Oh ok. I withdraw my proposal to invade Japan and enforce Christianity. It was so clear I had done that, and that was wrong of me. You're not freaking out at all.
