How much of this is a correlation between certain breeds and the groups who own them?
Certain groups are more likely to own pits or other aggressive dogs and are likely to name them something that sounds threatening.

But my understanding is that this study related to dogs adopted from a shelter. Generally, shelter volunteers assign names to those dogs.

My ex gf's grandmother had a dog with a very unique name. Now, her grandmother had immigrated to the United States as a teenager from the Middle East. She spoke French, Arabic, and English, and was a pretty accomplished and wealthy woman. Her dog's name translated to "little black slave boy" in Arabic. First time I found that out, I was like "WTF is wrong with you people!?"
