You can't be selling gas at $2.79 per gallon when your replacement cost is $2.79, you won't be in business long.
You also won’t be in business long if your ability to pay for tomorrows wholesale gas depends on your ability to sell todays retail gas.
Also it would be helpful to know what tomorrows wholesale price will be

They price it at whatever price then can sell it.
This is the only honest answer in the thread.

Or it could be less.
Or it could be less.

The reality is this.
They sell the gas for as much as they think they can sell it for.
Has nothing to do with the expected price on the next delivery. If it did… prices would move downward just as erratically as they move upward.
Further, many gas stations are buying their supply via a long term contract that’s not at the spot rate.

Costco actually seems to wait until the previous tank is empty and refilled before raising or lowering prices.

And you’ll pay it so quit complaining

Wait until after the midterms. The current fraudulently installed administration is doing everything they possibly can right now just to keep the fuel cost dam from bursting wide open.
It's going to massively flood us all come mid-November on through the holidays and we'll into 2023. Prepare thy anus for seeing $6.25/gal on your way to work and then $6.97 on your way home.
It's coming. I seriously hope everyone understands this. And since we're all suffering, I take great pleasure in knowing that the 60,000,000 dumb shits who voted for this shite are feeling the pain too.

You think the gas companies that supply the stations are going to lock themselves into a contract that means they sell gas at a loss when prices spike? Really?

The real profit margin for gas stations, especially those like Buccee’s, is all the other stuff you buy if you venture into the store itself.

The oil companies do not set the prices at the pump.

We had places outside the city loop at 3.09 and several a mile away inside the loop at 3.39.
Makes no goddamn sense

Most places change whenever they get a new delivery.
But I’m sure other places employ a different pricing strategy.

Depends on the flag/brand of the station and how fast prices are moving.

A lot stations don’t make money on fuel.
The major gas stations like Walmart(Murphy), Casey’s, BP, Phillips 66, Conoco, Citgo, etc… can make a profit, because they use their own trucks. Smaller stations usually just match the price of the bigger stations.
My friends station gets his fuel from the same place as Casey’s and Phillip 66, but pays more because of the delivery cost. He changes his price whenever they do.
Walmart gas is always the cheapest. If you use the app to pay you get 10 cents off a gallon. Today Walmart gas is 11 cents cheaper than Casey’s and when I used the app I saved 21 cents a gallon

Costco, et al, have a lot more reserve capital than Amir who owns the corner store. Costco can guess wrong and absorb a loss every now and then because they have a huge cushion. And then they’ll make up for that loss in another sector of their business. The individual station owner doesn’t have that luxury.

Imagine living in Europe, where gas is sold by the liter. Nearly 4 liters per gallon. Then overnight it goes up 19 cents per liter. I own my own driving business here and if my diesel powered car didn't get 60 mpg I would be working for free.

4.289 for me. Be happy you have a shitty car.

As far as I’ve know, there’s only like a 5-10 cent profit per gallon of gas.
You wanna who makes the most profit on gasoline? The oil companies, refineries or the gas stations? No. The government. Local, state and federal governments.
