Different Ballots for Democrat and Republican

My mother votes in Alabama. When she checked in, they asked which party’s ballot she wanted. She mentioned to me that she doesn’t feel like voting is truly done in secret if a poll worker knows which party you’re voting for, especially in today’s political climate.
I had never really thought about it from that angle. Can somebody explain the reasons for this to me? Preferably like I’m five?

It’s the only way to do it in closed primaries.

You have to take the ballot for what party you’re ultimately voting for in the general.
I always put my ballot in the scanner or select on a screen so it’s not like it’s cheating.

I don't know, it is a primary and they have to insure that voter votes in only one party primary. They won't know who you voted for , only which primary party. When real election day comes there are no such questions.
Mom may be a little overly suspicious, but I can understand why she might feel that way.

You don’t register with a party in Alabama. You can choose which party’s primary you vote in as you see fit. If there is a runoff, you’re not supposed to cross over and vote in a different primary than the one you initially voted in. There’s a long history on that issue in Alabama.

how are they going to know what primary she is voting on.
Dear lord use some common sense.

It is exactly what I told them when I went in to vote. As a registered Independent, I could not vote for a candidate unless I sign as a dem or a rep, even though there was no Independent candidate.
I understand the closed system, but when a party has no candidate in the race, that party member should be allowed to vote for whichever party they want to vote for without letting anyone know.
The class action was filed yesterday.

Shaniqua throws all the Republican ballots in the shredder.

My mother votes in Alabama.

All she meant was that she didn’t like telling another human which party she was voting in. She feels there should be a way to distribute the ballots without voters being asked out loud for party affiliation.

When I voted in the closed primary today in Dallas, the Republican side of the room was popping, the Dems never saw a participant.

it's a primary election being held by two parties.

That’s a fricking stupid opinion.

Well if your dream party can’t run a candidate, then you chose a suck arse party to join.
Party primaries are for parties.
I wish Louisiana republicans wouldn’t let independents vote in the GOP primaries!
