We are still a young country. How well are the checks and balances working?

Absolutely they did.

It’s the 2nd amendment not the 22nd amendment.

Yes, and those checks and balances were removed. Career politicians were never supposed to be a thing. Identity politics were never supposed to be a thing. We were never supposed to be a “democracy” where every single 75 IQ moron in the entire country gets to vote and choose our leaders and policies. This country wasn’t designed to have foreign and monopolized media outlets dominating the news cycle 24/7. We were supposed to have as much firepower as the military to keep them in check.

They anticipated all of this, they put guidelines in place to avoid it, and the feel-gooder liberals have gradually undone all of their rational work in favor of “my feels”. It’s fricked

While they knew people would be stupid and corrupt politicians would try to take advantage of that stupidity, there’s no way they could have predicted the way social media magnifies that stupidity.

They did everything they could to limit power of the federal government, knowing its proclivity to grow and infringe on the people’s rights

No or else they would have dictated the limit of justices to the Supreme Court and given term limits to Senators, Reps, and Justices.

No way the framers envisioned career politicians. No good government is designed to have politicians so engrained in government that they can become multi-millionaires and compound their wealth year after year by putting their interests above the people.

The framers had the provision that only land owners could vote. Have some skin in the game.

That was repealed. Needs to be brought back.

Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

" A Republic. If you can keep it. " - Benjamin Franklin.

They knew of mob rule, and were hell bent on denying it happen here on a national scale. Worked, up until now.

Yes, the framers anticipated this very thing. They thought that the checks and balances would last as long as the people of the country remained moral. They knew this democracy would eventually fall to factionalism. I expect they would be pleased and surprised at this country lasting 250 years.

Anyway, if you want to know more about this you can read the Federalist Papers. Hamilton, Jay and Madison discuss every facet of the government and other national institutions.

Life expectancy in 1789 was 38 years, so they didn’t really foresee the need for term limits. They crafted every word to limit federal power and term limits would do that.

Hell, they purposely put the age to be President at 35 because they didn’t think their arse would live long enough to be a dictator.

Say what?

You think that the Constitution originally contained a property requisite for exercise of the franchise? Good Lord, the Constitution left that matter entirely to the States, and that did not change for almost a century with ratification of the 15A.

In 1789, only a handful of the 13 original States limited the franchise to property owners, and even THOSE States had a number of gaping-hole exceptions.

VERY misleading statistic, because it includes childhood deaths (which were still VERY common). If a person survived to age eight or so, he had a really, really good chance of living well into his 50s or longer.

I mean the founders thought "shall not be infringed" would be clear enough, they were wrong...
