All over 70+

So 19.19% infection rate ,(about half had no signs and 1% mortality rate and not one crew member tested positive

Researchers are also extrapolating about a 0.5% mortality rate in China from their study

quote:

Infections and deaths onboard suggest that the disease’s true fatality ratio in China is about 0.5 percent, though that number may vary from place to place, researchers report March 9 in a paper posted at MedRxiv.org.

quote:

Enter the Diamond Princess cruise ship. Quarantined at sea off Japan after a passenger tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the ship became a natural data lab where nearly everyone was tested and few cases of infection were missed

So a place where people are literally stacked on top of each other and breathing the same recycled air has an infection rate of about 19% and roughly half didn't have any symptoms.

Sorry sky screamers and I know you hate hearing these numbers but to virtually shut down our economy over this virus is absurd.

Sure,be smart and take precautions but the panic and over reaction to this thing is getting WAY out of control.

If you apply those rates to cities, would it overwhelm the healthcare system?

Important to note that the ship's average age was 58, with 1/3 of the passengers 70 years or older. Thus that 1% mortality rate is for a population of predominantly high-risk individuals. The mortality rate for the general population will be well below that.

Thanks for researching that.

I was going to do the research on the Diamond Princess outcome myself today but you saved me the trouble.

Apparently stacked like a slave ship sailing to the Americas.

We have the best healthcare in the world, and are people are the healthiest in the world.

This is a deep state conspiracy to end Trump.

Is it just me or does this post demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of how viruses spread?

There's quite a difference between a city and a cruise ship.

All at once?Sure but this was a place where people were FAR more vulnerable to infection just because of their proximity to each other.

BTW, infection rates only mean positive tests and not illness and new infections almost came
to a standstill once people self quarantined.

If it is and this thing has minimal impact, it could be another huge back fire. Even if it is been an over reaction it will be seen as a success in leadership.

Maybe, for a little while.

If you shut down the country, will it threaten our way of life?
Yes.

Will it cripple the economy?
Yes

Will we recover from it?
Maybe eventually

The age of those effected place them all in the high risk category.

For a general population, agree would be significantly less, perhaps half as high.

Also, none of the crew got it.

I have heard that young people seem to get infected less. Some feel that may be because they have more recently been infected with multiple different coronaviruses.

The screaming is somewhat ridiculous. However a agree with limiting large gatherings and being careful.

Social distancing is not a bad idea.

At the end of the day, it depends how careful you are doing flu season anyways

Wash your hands and be careful.

Really

However you want to frame it the population density of a cruise ship is obviously FAR higher than a city in the world.

Well it likely overstates the significance of air on the cruise ship as well

It's unlikely that the virus circulated through the vents, but it does reflect the close proximity of people eating and drinking and walking around - more akin to a crowded city.

The study also doesn't appear to account for the close and immediate attention the cruisers got. On the plus side, as OP indicates, there probably weren't a bunch of missed cases. However, they were likely caught fairly early and treated in an environment where they could get a ton of attention the rest of us won't have in the coming weeks.

20% infection rate in close proximity and 1% death rate is probably realistic. But I would certainly differ from OP in his idea that it's not all that significant.

So why don't we just quarantine the vulnerable 15% and let the the other 85% keep the country going?

Encouraging to see such a low fatality rate with a higher risk population

I wonder how well the ship's economy was doing during the quarantine.

I also wonder why you didn't discuss the measures taken on the ship to contain things.
