They are literal kooks. Those above age 60 and up.
I don't know what happened to them back in the 1970s, but they are nutbags. I actually cannot find the better words to describe them.

Bubba baw there are probably more maga cult kooks over 60 in them there trailer parks all over God’s baw country. They got em scattered all over SEC football country. From Tejas to the Carolinas and from West Virginia to the Redneck Riviera.
