I was in Istanbul 8 months ago. My waiter at a restaurant was an Iranian expatriate. He confirmed everything we hear in the news. When he turned 18, his parents paid smugglers to get him out of the country. He had a.younger brother that they are trying to get out now. They told him never to return. He said he hopes he can see his parents again.
