You two are coming unhinged.

War stimulates economies.
Russia has a 700 billion dollar war chest and China to boot.
I hope Putin fails at what he's doing but, I understand why he is.

First of all, WE and NATO wouldn’t be “starting” WWIII over that. Putin would’ve started it by invading Latvia. We and NATO would finish it because we have Latvia’s back, legally and morally. That’s the difference between that hypothetical scenario and the Ukraine situation - we have Ukraine’s back morally but not legally. We are under no obligation to help them.
So you're down for "being involved in" WWIII if Putin invades a shithole with fewer than 2 million people.
Got it.
We all question whether Latvia should have been allowed to join NATO, but they're a part now. If we don't defend them, who's to say we defend Poland? Germany? And by "we", I mean EVERY NATO nation, not just the US.
Outside of the fear of nukes, that's the primary thing keeping the peace in Europe. You don't do a quick and dirty land-grab in the Balkans because you face the repercussions.
NATO should be, and likely is, buzzing like hornets all around the borders right now. Don't hit Russian forces in Belarus or Ukraine (or Russia), but let them know shite better not bleed over into other (NATO) countries. That's the objective purpose of that treaty.

As soon as Russia takes the Ukraine, Putin will bring a massive army to nato’s border. A full Russian invasion of Europe is coming. Only God, the US, and the Russian people can stop it
The left has about as much understanding of geopolitical strategy as it does of economics.

3-6 months? No. He needs to concentrate on shoring up the areas he has now and adding Belarus. Poland is for when China hits Taiwan. No reason to do it alone.

German Army Standing Bare
quote:
Germany’s highest-ranking military officer cast doubt on the Germany army's combat readiness, claiming that years of neglect have left it in a questionable state amid the ongoing Ukrainian-Russian war.
Inspector of the Army Lt. Gen. Alfons Mais described the army as "standing bare" and said it would be limited in its capabilities should it be asked to assist in a NATO mission in a post he shared on his LinkedIn profile, Stripes.com reported.
quote:
"In my 41st year of service in peace, I would not have thought I would have had to experience another war," he added in the post. "And the army that I am allowed to lead, is more or less standing bare."
Germany is the largest and wealthiest NATO country and the leader of their military saying they have nothing. So who is going to go against the Russian Bear? The French? The Dutch?

The United States should send in the best to fight.

Everyone presenting this argument was pissed in August because America wasn’t helping our allies in Afghanistan when we pulled out. You can’t have it both ways. You either man up and honor your commitments or you duck and run. Right now we have no commitment to involve ourselves in this war. If Russia attacks an alliance member then it’s on. Until then, we sit by.
If you were pissed when we left our partner troops in Afghanistan after we pulled out, you are ok with fighting if/when this spills over to NATO members.

Would we, and NATO, start WWIII over Putin invading Latvia?
Most likely it would be Lithuania at first with the claim of restoring access to Kaliningrad as their necessity. This would likely happen in a similar fashion as the Ukraine invasion, with troops moving in from both Russia and Belarus. From there he would attempt to swallow Latvia and Estonia.
All three are NATO members. Not supporting them would essentially break NATO and the EU as they are members of both. At the very least it would say to Putin that neither organization has the will to defend against military aggression until it's too late.

Allowing those countries into NATO was ridiculous.
Disagree. Those states are based as frick and begged to join NATO and as a per capita by population they spend quite a bit more on NATO than either the UK or Germany do (footnote: when looking at per capita spending, Norway spends nearly 2x on NATO than we do). When looking at spending as a percentage of their individual GDP, all three are in the top 8.
They want to be there and embody the ideals of liberty every bit as much as we do (or more, depending on which country you are looking at and how liberty is judged).

An attack on a boot state invokes nato articles of mutual defense. Either into states honor those articles or NATO ceases to exist.

I don't think so, there are plenty of non-natos to invade.
Agree. If they go further, it will be former soviet states and they will justify it as taking back what was once theirs. The 3 Baltic states are NATO, and they will hesitate there unless they really want WW3.
