Seen my post above. How do you break up a state where the most polar example still has over a third opposition population? That's not going to work and most states are much closer to 50/50

I believe it would self sort. We are currently seeing this since Covid. People are moving to Texas, Fla, Tenn, SC because of their political leanings and away from Cali and NY because of their political leanings.

A decent start would be to "un-gerrymander" those states.

It should be said plainly: This is illegal, it has always been illegal, and the precedent it sets pushes Congress, the branch of government with the power of the purse, into total irrelevance.

Coming from a member of the branch that hasn't passed a balanced budget in a quarter of a century.

a very intelligent post and exactly right..

this is the single largest challenge facing our republic today.. ultimately, most likely end result is devolution to nation states. the population won't tolerate a modern day Augustus... and similarly we should be concerned when anyone starts to say "i'm the only one that can fix it" as DJT has said many times. and Newsome recently. no one person can fix and suppression of minorities ends in conflict.

how rome ended

The 20th Century was a period of continuous devolution of authority by Congress and the States to the Executive and Federal Courts.

I don’t think society is that polar; I think gerrymandering has made congress that way.
Not the Senate. Which was the whole point of the design. To further the point, Congressional impotence is virtually entirely a Senate failure phenomenon.

I would argue the Congressional component, relevant to this thread, is a 21st century phenomenon. It represents a impotence related ceding/shedding of power, rather than natural devolution.

The Executive has tried to take more control of legislating from the Legislative branch for at least the last hundred years, and the Legislature has happily ceded that authority over. They don't want to govern, it is easier to play the fighter than the ruler.

Now two big things that could help would be term limits and ending of PAC's. Would allow alternative parties to compete with people who actually want to legislate. But asking the people who would be hurt by those changes to actually do it is impossible.

How much genuine wealth is created inside a high-rise building vs that which is created in garages, fields, workshops, mom&pop businesses, etc?

I'm not saying they produce nothing at all. But by and large they mostly take advantage of real producers, scrape a share of the proceeds, file lawsuits, or exist to ensure other people are being properly held back by regulations that they probably lobbied for.

Seems that way. They don't represent their constituents, once in office all they care about is staying in office.

We'll go the way of Rome, on a much shorter timeline. Seems clear enough China will be the world's next superpower and we will fracture and devolve into nation-states over culture wars, debt explosion, currency debasement and government unable to function. I'm ok with being back in the Republic of Texas!
