They don't have people trained to open and close valves? Is that how fricking stupid this country has become?
It’s not that simple. Besides, I am sure that they can’t flow that pipeline without being able to monitor and run leak detection.

fricking pipelines have been around since long before computers controlled everything, and I'm pretty sure that Colonial pipeline has been around a pretty good while.

Not this administration. Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it’s our government’s official position that this country consumes too much of everything, and oil tops the list. A disruption like this is quietly cheered on the Left.

Time to revert back to analog technology to control our vital infrastructure. Hard connections!

Your probably right about that!

That was my first thought with the Boeing 737 Max. The computers are flying the plane right into the ground loaded with people and they can't shut those damn computers completely off and have an easy way to fly it manually? I mean WTF and what kind of idiot engineers are designing these things today.

i would be shocked if there was not analog control systems

I wish I could agree with you, but I won't be shocked if there isn't. This world has become that stupid.

I think the bigger problem is the accounting side. Dozens, if not scores of companies put gasoline into the pipeline in blocks, and take it out at the other end. This would be a massive headache if they didn’t know if 89 or 93 octane was coming out at the other end and who owned it. At least that’s my understanding.

This guy? Explain it to him like he's 5.

It's a fricking pipeline, shite runs through it. If it can't be operated somewhat manually, heads need to roll.
All pipelines are run remotely by a control center. Someone is watching a computer screen 24 hours a day, monitoring pressures and flows. There's also a mass balance leak detection software running at all times to ensure pipeline integrity.
Colonial runs crude and refined product. This means valves must be swung to start and deliver different batches. Scrapers, pigs, need to be launched to separate some fluids.
The average person doesn't understand the complexity of these systems.

Colonial pipeline was up and running before computers. They went to computer controls to eliminate employees. This is how you frick up.

Don't know if you've been paying attention, but the military has told this fricking fraud administration to frick off.

I’d imagine the computers allowed the pipeline to become more complex possibly allow a higher volume usage with the automation.

I'm sure that was the goal, and it probably worked until now, except now you don't have the personnel in the field that really understand how the system operates at local junctions in a way that they can keep it functioning at decreased volume. It's shut down completely.
