Because of “Covid-19”.....and we can’t have anyone experiencing anxiety. Proof that even traditionally good academic schools have by in large become nothing but diploma mills and lost any value they previously had. Diplomas for sale, anyone in the market for one?

quote:

Applicants to Millsaps College will not be required to submit standardized test scores to be considered for admission for at least the next application cycle, the college announced today. The decision was made because of issues related to student access to standardized testing sites across the country because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The pandemic has added unfortunate obstacles to the lives of our prospective students and their families,” says Vice President of Enrollment Beth Clarke. “Limited access to testing sites across the country and day-of testing cancellations have added an additional layer of difficulty. We want to do everything we can to reduce anxiety and increase access to Millsaps.”

quote:

More than half of all U.S. four-year colleges and universities will be test-optional for the fall 2021 admission cycle according to the National Center for Fair and Open Testing. Millsaps College will consider a number of factors when students apply for admission during the next application cycle, including high school grades, course selection, activities, an essay and recommendations.

But wait, there is an extra benefit to waiving these requirements:

quote:

The removal of the requirement for standardized test scores has an additional benefit of increasing educational opportunity for first-generation and underrepresented students. “It has been shown that standardized tests reinforce the socio-economic achievement gap because the tests often reflect differences caused by educational discrimination at the secondary level,” Clarke said. “Millsaps is committed to providing a rigorous residential liberal arts experience to all students, and our move to test optional reinforces this mission.

Most schools are OK with this because it allows them to frick whites and Asians at the expense of other groups.

They are using it as an excuse to accept more dummies and get more money. Won’t be held against them in “college rankings” this year.

The top schools are not doing this. If you're in the bottom half of schools, it's not going to matter. No one is going to cry over the University of Phoenix and Mississippi State Universities of the world not accepting test scores for this cycle.

Remove the standards and you remove the commercial value of a degree.

Way to cut your own throats!

I would like to think that this goes hand in hand with an assumption that no test score = low test score but I know that's wishful thinking.

Well the ACT/SAT group is so f’d up right now. My daughter took the ACT in June and we still don’t have her scores back. All testing was cancelled in April and May and some for June and July. They opened up registration for the fall test dates on Monday and the registration system was overwhelmed and crashed. As if this morning it’s still down. I made it through the registration process up to the point of entering CC info and hitting submit. I got an error message. She’s not registered for a test, but they managed to charge my card.

With how messed up it it, it’s going to be hard for kids to get their testing done in time for scholarship deadlines.

Many schools had already quit requiring them anyway. Grad schools with GRE, too.

I know, how dare they set their own admissions standards apart from the private testing monopoly.

You are correct. However, the reason why standardized tests were adopted was because GPAs were horrible predictors of who will succeed in college.
Today, minorities with bad test scores will be passed along in college because they are minorities.

They're using Covid as an excuse. They want EVERYONE to get a loan and go to college. Win/win for the banks and politicians and universities and their 'tenured' professors. Good luck getting your A/C worked on or food shelved at the grocery stores !

That's not at all why standardized tests were created. Colleges used to all have their own individual entrance exams. Then the Ivys decided they wanted a way to show their students were better than those of other schools, so they could continue to charge a premium.
