NYC lawmakers consider making Mamdani's city-owned grocery stores permanent

I can't wait to see how these stores do in the free market.

New York City Councilmember Jennifer Gutiérrez and some of her colleagues are pushing a proposal to require the establishment of at least five municipal grocery stores per borough.
The proposal calls for the commissioner of small business services or the leader of a different agency designated by the mayor to create at least five grocery stores per borough "in consultation or partnership to the extent feasible with a contracted entity," according to the measure.
A press release pertaining to the mayor's effort earlier this year noted, "The city-owned grocery initiative is designed to lower costs on everyday staples by using public ownership to eliminate costs that are currently passed on to consumers."
I can't wait to see how these stores do in the free market.

As long as their losses are covered by the taxpayers, they can sustain indefinitely.

Grocery store profit margins are razor thin, especially on the "staples" this initiative plans to concentrate on.
Just how much savings do they anticipate passing on?

Yep, they're operating under the assumption that these mean old privately owned grocery stores are ripping people off when they're really not.
They'll find out how expensive it is to run, operate and make a profit from very thin margins.
The people will see they're not saving anything and with the "great customer experience" they'll be getting from gubmin run stores, they'll probably start complaining about it but of course, they'll still vote socialism in.

Will all the workers in these places be deemed city employees, with things like Civil Service protection and all?

In the OP, they mention working with "contractors" so these will probably be actually ran by real grocery store companies.
The prices won't be any better, but when they inevitably lose money, they will just stay open to avoid the dreaded food deserts.

Which costs will be eliminated? Or is government paying those costs? And if government is paying the costs, are not the public still paying them?

Typical. The first store won't open for another year, and this proposal. Morons.

Everybody in NY City that needs groceries should just use their tax payer funded EBT/Snap cards.
I think these city owned "grocery stores" are just gonna be a big tax grift on the working folks of NY City.

If they are so great why is it necessary to mandate them into law?
