I think this is when they made the switch to HFCS.

Yep. They made the switch about that time AND the Coca Cola company was absolutely secretive about it. After the "New Coke" debacle, they said "OK we will bring back Coke Classic" but that was a lie, because Coke Classic is made with HFCS. Original Coca Cola is made with cane sugar.

Sugarcane Coke taste better than HFCS Coke

No it doesn't. Zero difference in taste between a Coke made in the US using cane sugar or HFCS. If you imagine otherwise then look up "acid catalyzed sucrose inversion". Mexican Coke you say? Mexican Coke has twice as much salt, that's the difference you taste...

They went to new Coke to try and beat Pepsi because the fricking yanks preferred the the taste of a neutered cola like Pepsi. Coke has a stronger flavor but was already being made with HFCS. When they said they were bringing back the original Coke, renamed “Classic” Coke it was the same thing they had before the new Coke bullshite. They quit using bags of sugar around 1978 or 79. At least in BR and NOLA. Baton Rouge didn’t make Coke syrup until they added the facilities onto the old plant around 1985 or so, and it was designed for HFCS from the get-go.

Everything Coke is designed for the liquid HFCS that comes in tankers. To use sugar locally would be to get these 2500 lb granulated bags of sugar and dissolve them in water before use. I would imagine the sweetener suppliers will start dissolving sugar and delivering it in liquid form in tankers like they do now.

The story is that HFCS was a cheaper sweetener, so that and the powerful corn lobby is responsible for that shite being in all our foods and gasoline, of all things. frick the corn industry.

I was just reading through this about to give a chemistry lesson and I see someone (not surprised it is you) understands.

You clearly know as soon as sucrose is mixed into the Coke which is a acidic environment, the sucrose begins acid-catalyzed sucrose inversion. In very short order the sucrose will become free fructose and glucose and become indistinguishable chemically and thus taste-wise from HFCS. So if you get one right off the line like Lucky was able to get a chip for Bobby you MAY be able to tell the difference between the sweeteners if you are a super taster but by the time it hits the shelf it is chemically identical to HFCS.

The formula is different between the two, that is what people taste and the easily verifiable difference is the amount of salt included as you pointed out, just look at the labels. Even direct off the line the significant increase in salt in the Mexican Coke will be easily recognizable. There is also a slight difference in the amount of sweetener used and results in the Mexican Coke tasinting very slightly sweeter even after inversion.

If US Coke uses their same formula and just changes to sucrose, you won't be able to taste the difference if it comes from the normal chain of commerce, if you do it is simply confirmation bias which in this case ain't hurting a thing but it doesn't make the myth any more real.

They tailor the formula for every major market, Europe, SE Asia, Japan, China.....all get their own tweaks to appeal better to local tastes. They only thing that is truly common is the level of water treatment Coke requires of bottlers, very strict standards to make sure that the end product is consistent. I almost never drink any kind of soft drink, my fiancée is a dentist and does full-mouth rehabs in patients who were habitual Coke drinkers and the photos of what she starts with are horrifying...

Coke has responded with a statement

quote:

“The name sounds complex, but high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) – which we use to sweeten some of our beverages – is actually just a sweetener made from corn,” Coca-Cola said in a statement. “It’s safe; it has about the same number of calories per serving as table sugar and is metabolized in a similar way by your body.” It added that the American Medical Association “has confirmed that HFCS is no more likely to contribute to obesity than table sugar or other full-calorie sweeteners”, and said: “Please be assured that Coca-Cola brand soft drinks do not contain any harmful substances.”

All true, except the fact that HFCS being as "safe" as sugar doesn't mean much.

I cannot explain this.

But coke tastes better in the glass bottles than in the plastic ones. I have no idea why except maybe the surface cleaning or finishing of the bottles are different.
