Assuming the pastors aren't involved, I agree. And in that case I would expect this to get tossed.

Again, you're saying volation of religious freedom is okay if the religious people are idiots to you.

No I'm not

I'm saying if you play stupid games, expect to win stupid prizes. Given that there has been no religious freedom violations as of now, this can simply be considered either frivolous plaintiffs getting what they deserve OR a pouty subpoena which will be thrown out if the churches/pastors aren't involved. In neither case were the rights of churches violated.

I'm appalled by the unisex bathrooms! I'm fine with gay people getting married and have no problem with ga ypeople in general. However, I'm really, really sick of having to kowtow to people who are different than I am. I'm fine with other people's lifestyles because it doesn't affect me who people choose to love. It does affect when some dude is in the ladies'. That offends me and the majority of women I'm sure. And it creeps me out. Why aren't the majority considered when trying not to offend?

THis referendum was supposed to be on the ballot next month too, but her cronies made sure it wasn't.

Although there was lots of shady shite on the other side as well. Although it's obvious they (mayor and friends) know putting it to a vote would shoot it down with quickness. South Park did an amazing job with the bathroom issue last week.

File frivolous lawsuits, get your 1st amendment stripped.

Religious freedom means expressing your religion without threat from the gov't. More directly, a preacher may only intend his message for his followers. That particular religious right has been overtly violated. And I suspect you are capable of understanding the more subtle intimidation at place, culturally and institutionally. You understand why we don't have prayer in government affairs, even if we don't mandate everyone's head bowed and mouths moving.

At the very least, these churches were inconvenienced and had their reasonable right to privacy and sacrament violated by the government specifically because of their religious beliefs. That's the best case scenario. Assuming the entire article is correct, and not just the parts that are convenient to you

Feel the same way. The thing I am tired of is bowing to the needs or offenses of a small minority in place of the vast majority.

The bathroom issue doesn't bother me too much. There should just be private bathrooms for those that have issues and be done with it. The thing I worry about is when one of these people wants to use a locker room or something like that. It makes a bunch of people uncomfortable in place of the feelings of one person. Then there will be idiots that take advantage of it. Not many, but there will be some really dumb stories over time.

Blatantly unconstitutional and a violation of the first amendment and separation of the church and state.

No penii in the women's restroom, and no women commandeering a men's restroom when your sisters take too long in the women's head. Police your own.

What about in the real world? Who's paying for the legal fees in this situation? The mayor? nope.

What happens if you don't write out your sermons? I know many priests who preach without any aids or any guides. Sure they prepare plenty but it is preached from memory and they adjust as they go. What will they do with them.

Which is completely not the jurisdiction of the city.

It is if they have an exemption from property or sales taxes.

Wrong. Those are based solely on non-profit status. Sales taxes are governed by state law. and property status by county appraisal district.

Which makes it more curious that these sermons were the object of a subpoena. Given the relative size of these churches, I would guess that most of the sermons are available on their websites in podcast form. This was simple intimidation by the city.

And on her Facebook page, the first item is: her proclamation declaring October 2014 to be "National Bullying Prevention Month in Houston". Plus a free film screening of the award winning film "Bully".

How hypocritical is that?

Many churches, especially in bigger cities with larger congregations, have online sermons in video and/or transcript form.

This is a posturing move, it has nothing to do with actually obtaining the sermons.

Making it clearly a government official attempting to intimidate these pastors. Hmmm...sounds like government interference with the free practice of religion. Seems like I've read about that somewhere...

It would be nice if one of the churches responded with something on the lines of "Podcasts of all sermons are available online. Feel free to listen and learn something".
