In a fantasy world, I see their point.

In the real world,...

NY Post

quote:

The Chicago Police Department has unveiled a new policy prohibiting its officers from chasing people on foot simply because they run away, or because they have committed minor offenses.

The policy, which was introduced Tuesday, also encourages cops to “consider alternatives” to pursuing someone who “is visibly armed with a firearm.”

Under the policy, officers may give chase if they believe a person is committing or is about to commit a felony, a Class A misdemeanor such as domestic battery, or a serious traffic offense that could risk injuring others, such as drunken driving or street racing.

Perhaps most significantly, the new policy makes clear that the days of officers giving chase just because someone tries to get away from them are over.

“People may avoid contact with a member for many reasons other than involvement in criminal activity,” the policy states.

So if you just keep running during a snatch/smash and grab the police can’t ever stop you?

Lemme examine this with logic. Let us take the totality of criminals...100% is the whole set. Now divide them into two possible categories:

a. Those who wish to get away after a crime.

b. Those who do not wish to get away after a crime.

I wonder how the percentages break down with those two.

Officers are also prohibited from provoking chases, such as by employing a tactic in which they speed in their squad cars toward a group of people, stop suddenly and jump out “with the intention of stopping anyone in the group who flees.”

a lot of this is good shite. simply fleeing from cops with no other indications of a crime is complete horeshit to initiate a stop. I don't imagine founding fathers would see losing a game of chicken with cops is a legit cause for detention search and seizure.

cops are still allowed to chase if there is a felony or violent misdemeanor or dangerous traffic violation.

quote:

ncluding a requirement that the pursuit must end if a third party is injured and needs immediate medical attention that can’t be provided by anyone else.

yea. fully support this one. no reason to chase down a criminal if there is someone requiring immediate attention and no one else is arround. sorry you shouldn't leave people bloodied and dying to chase down someone fleeing with a gram of weed.

That's one way to drop the crime rate, just don't pursue.

i actually agree with the policy, i feel it puts too many innocent people in harms way. this is assuming it is not a major crime and the criminal is not a threat to others in the form of violence.

also much safer for the police.

thats not what it says. it is talking minor offenses.

i understand desire to limit crime, but as a conservative i think this is a good thing.

i do not agree with high speed chases or things that put innocent bystanders in harms way.

what would you say if a cop is chasing a criminal and knocks a women accidently in front of a moving taxi, killing her?

to me you cut down on crime with way more officers on the street, high level investigations that go after the kingpins(think how they killed the mob) and you hand down rico sentences for gang activity.

Given the physical shape of most cops, this will change the outcomes very little.

Except save cops from potential soft tissue injuries.

This kind of shite does not work when dealing with a culture that views doing prison time as a badge of honor. They do their 5 years, get out, and immediately become the most respected person in the hood.

im not and i am talking from a conservative side as far as endangerment of innocent bystanders.

and if you double the police force, have cops on every corner in both high crime areas and retail areas i would think it would cut down on this tremendously especially if you hand out huge sentences.

I took the article as...hey dont chase down someone for selling untaxed cigs or stealing a candy bar....but do chase down people who steel large amounts or expensive items...you know felonies. so chase the ones down that are doing the big orginized attacks.

also as much as i hate cameras and facial recognition, this is where you use it.

i agree somewhat, but have to change that culture and call a spade a fricking spade and stop pandering to them, no matter the race.

You're supposing that small crimes don't lead to big crimes.

Actually, what I find more dangerous for the general public is car chases.
Just encourages the perp to drive faster and recklessly in order to escape.
