His money.
If he’s comfortable only helping black Auburn students who are in financial need, that’s his prerogative.
Speaks volumes about the man.

Sir Charles is suggesting he can determine how I racially identify just based on my looks??
Sounds like he's a bigot, to me.

What is the minimum shade needed to qualify?
Posted on 7/1/23 at 2:33 pm to TrueTiger
That's actually a really good question... What amount of black is needed to qualify? Iono...

He can do that if he wants, but yeah, it may open him up to criticism.

Apparently he doesn’t have faith that black students are capable of earning places at Auburn, since all the SCOTUS decision did was state race cannot be considered for admission decisions.

Litmus test is to replace word black with white and see what results. Sir Charles is a gem but what he is doing is the definition of racism. Rich white guy would not be allowed to do same thing for poor white kids. It’s a double standard in our society and if you are being intellectually honest it has been that way for decades if not longer.

It's his money I don't see anything wrong with this

Hopefully we see a lawsuit.

That’s a long weekend in Vegas for him

He should just donate it to our NIL collective and it will find it's way to black students eventually.

It will be interesting to see how much of that will go to actual scholarships.

Surely, someone in a hoarded up shotgun can find a Schwegmann's bag to send to him?

Imagine if I did the same for white students only.

Yep, let Elon Musk set up a fund for only whites and see what the reaction would be.

To be fair "earning a spot with full academic scholarships" and "earning a spot and not being able to afford it" are two different things.
I have no problem with someone dedicating money to a kid based on race who qualifies academically the same as any other kid of any other race but can't afford it. I don't think it's morally right, but it's his money.
I do have a problem with the school itself basing admission requirements on nothing more than race.

His money, and honestly, good for him. I believe he had a fairly rough childhood and I've heard him talk about black culture he grew up with. He's one of the honest one's out there.
The article said that Auburns black enrollment is only around 5%. That's absurdly low for that geographic location.
The reason I post this reply, is because this morning I read that a group of inner city black kids were tracked every 4 years from 4th through graduation. Only 15% were proficient in English. That number was consistent with every year they tracked them. No improvements. I've also noticed the last couple years with the anti racist/DEI folks that they are starting to specifically target English as white supremacy. A Penn state English professor is going through a struggle session right now about that very topic.
I believe the black enrollment at Ivy schools was also around the same amount as Auburn. Give or take 5%.
I think Barkley has concluded that a lot of black kids, especially rural southern kids, don't have very good teachers, they may want to learn, be open to it but they just can't get over the hill for whatever reason. I don't see that money going to well to do black kids. It's for someone on the margins with 2.5 HS GPA and average to below average test scores who has a real desire to get in the room with good professors at a state school.
The sad part is, blacks have access to everything possible to thrive in a college atmosphere but how many make it to graduation day in high school with even the ability, as I pointed out, to give themselves a chance? If those on the cusp are the ones Barkley is targeting, good for him. BLM could have set up and entire scholarship system with what they were taking in after George Floyd. Where is that money at?
Regarding affirmative action supreme court decision, Barkley was complaining about it the other day during the golf challenge on TV. Fine, everyone's everyone's got an opinion but personally I don't think descrimination against over qualified Asians was the proper response, looking at you, University of California system.
If the Ivy schools and Auburn can't pump that number up higher than 5% enrollment, there's something larger at play, if Barkley can address it. Good on him.

Did he just say “stays diverse”? I guess he just lived at the basketball arena when he was a student there.

Very good points. It appears he is wanting to make sure they have the funds if accepted. I don’t have a problem with it if that is his intent.
