Black children of large casino stockholders will get preference.

He had to. He knows Auburn about to stop admitting any blacks not on athletic scholarship.

That's actually a really good question... What amount of black is needed to qualify? Iono...
The same amount to get a pass on saying the "N" word.

Would Auburn accept a white scholarship?

Curious if there are academic standards as well as skin color.
Are applicants required to take the "Brown Paper Bag" test?

Very good points. It appears he is wanting to make sure they have the funds if accepted. I don’t have a problem with it if that is his intent.
I don't either, as long as, a wealthy white man can do the same with white only scholarships, without criticism.
One of the new trolls started a thread the other day about white orgs to promote white people related needs, and he got beat up for being a fed, etc. Which I get, but the premise is legit, especially since all we see on TV, etc are race related promotions of special months/days. I would be bet money on those channels would reject white people versions of the exact same commercials. Which is a major issue that needs to change if this nation has a chance of survival I to the future.

He must be flush. Saw where he committed $1mm to Jackson State and was a first installment. Not sure what he committed.

He's free to do that...but we can all imagine the national/international outrage if a HOF former player from Auburn would have said they were setting up a scholarship for white students...regardless of the reasons given.

Paying for college and getting accepted to college aren't the same thing, Chuck.

Apparently he doesn’t have faith that black students are capable of earning places at Auburn, since all the SCOTUS decision did was state race cannot be considered for admission decisions.
Maybe he doesn't have faith that many African American students who are admitted will actually be able to afford to go.
You do realize that being admitted doesn't mean that you can attend if you can't pay, right?
Please tell us that you understand the difference.

I believe the black enrollment at Ivy schools was also around the same amount as Auburn. Give or take 5%.
No shot! 13% - same as their population share.
The reason Auburn has only 5% is because almost every black student who is up to Auburn standards gets recruited by Harvard et al. And we end up with 13% black enrollment at Harvard, most of whom can’t do the course work but get socially promoted; and we have Auburn deprived of the students who could thrive there.
Black students, probably partly because of this, have been choosing to segregate themselves into HBCUs.
Ultimately the problem is parents and the breakdown of black families that was caused by the welfare state. If the “Great Society” had never been passed most blacks would be raised in two parent households and would have productive upbringings. But then they wouldn’t vote 90% Democrat.

Leaving $5mil in his will to AU for scholarship for black students.
I think I'll reword my will and leave the five percent I have dedicated to a local college to white students.

Rich white guy would not be allowed to do same thing for poor white kids.
Uhhh, you may not realize it, but this is still America and as a private citizen you can still give your fricking money to whoever the hell you want and for whatever reason.
People can like or hate on Barkley for this, but there have been some utterly stupid takes in this thread.

That’s great. Props to Chuck.

Maybe.
That isn’t what he said tho.
His response is based on yesterday’s decision (i.e., affirmative action no longer being used as admissions criterion).
I understand your defense of him; most people don’t want to be believe he’s prejudiced.
From the linked article:
quote:
The Supreme Court’s ruling declaring race can no longer be used as a criterion for college admissions was a “shot across the bow, man,” says Charles Barkley.
quote:
But after that ruling yesterday, my phone was blowing up. I was talking to my friends and said, ‘I need to make sure Black folks always have a place at Auburn.

His money, and honestly, good for him. I believe he had a fairly rough childhood and I've heard him talk about black culture he grew up with. He's one of the honest one's out there.
Racism is racism…..no matter how noble the gesture.
