Haven't perused this Thread...but what comes to my mind is that all of the layoffs that come from the impossible business scenario of $15/hr...will draw a Government Unemployment stipend which likely triples their normal working pay. This happened in the last Covid Stimulus Bill. The next is likely to be open ended; as such has little to do with disease, and more to do with social justice.
We'll know soon.

No way senate parliamentarian will allow it in the reconciliation bill.
1. The Senate has already dropped it for now.
2. Do you really think that the dems care about the rules?

It wouldnt be. People are already losing their jobs, this will accelerate that.
It’s incremental, wouldn’t be $15 until 2025.

I listened to a lady on the TV this morning complaining about how many women were being laid off during the pandemic and she then started advocating for a raise in the minimum wage. I was thinking, hey if they can't afford you at 10 an hour how can they afford you at 15 an hour?

Why do you progressives invoke Jesus?
Anyway, Jesus actually did stuff for poor people other than post on a message board and wait for mommy gov.

Actually my company did an across the board $2 an hour raise and then terminated 2000 mid level managers making $75k-$90k a year. Over the years every time a raise was in acted the result was hiring freezes loss of hours loss of benefits and reduction of employees by 15-20 percent. Great plan Dims.

I’m not progressive. I just think something has to be done about stagnant wages. Businesses aren’t raising them on their own so they need a little push from Uncle Sam.
We don’t have unfettered capitalism in this country, the government has always stepped in when things get out of control. Real wages not rising for decades is a crisis and it’s hurting the country in many different ways, like lower marriage and birth rates and lower rates of homeownership. That’s why I think the gov needs to step in.

If I understand reconciliation correctly this should make the min wage increase ineligible for the reconciliation bill unless they can take that 58 billion away from something else.

The only thing the govt is doing is making sure the cost of goods increases sharply. Stagnant wages are an issue but this isn't the answer at all.

So what’s the answer to real wages not rising in decades? It hasn’t happened naturally so the government needs to step in. Costs of goods and services go up all the time, and people just keep getting squeezed because wages aren’t rising at the same rate.
Also feel like I need to reiterate that this is a gradual increase over years. It’s not going to $15 overnight.

Here in FL, the stupid populace voted for $15/hr minimum wage to scale up by 2026. The people who vote for that don't realize that they're voting themselves out of jobs.
Not like they will after this. You think your local grocery store is going to keep prices the same after they have to pay all of their high school cashiers, baggers, and shelf stockers the same wage that a fair amount of entry level jobs are starting at?
Also, there's another consequence. Let's say a business opens and they do party supplies and setups. They start guys out at $10ish an hour. After a few years, guys can work their way up to be drivers who make $16/hour now. Do you think the guy who has worked his way up to $16/hour is going to get his salary bumped too, or is he going to be bitter because he worked his arse off to get to $16/hour and the rest of the employees get to $15/hour with the stroke of Biden's pen?
What about little boutique shops that pay a few college kids $10/hour to run the cash register? Those cashiers will lose their jobs or the shop will go under altogether.
Small business owners don't all live in fancy mansions and drive Porsches. If you make them pay their employees more than what they're worth, these businesses will go under.

First, it would be WAY more than that
It could be less.
Not likely. I work for a hotel company. They are seriously concerned about this $15 minimum wage passing. In places like California and Connecticut where we have hotels, it's not a big deal. Pretty much every hourly worker already is at $15/hour anyway. And the room night rates reflect it and the modest profit margins for the owners are maintained.
$15 hour mandated at our hotel in Tulsa, OK though? At current staffing levels it would wipe out all profits and you can't just say "oh well just increase your average room night rates from $100 to $150/night to make up the difference." People aren't paying that for that hotel. We absolutely will reduce hours/headcount to maintain profit margins as much as possible. Some of the headcount will be frontline hotel workers and some of it will be corporate overhead but jobs will absolutely be cut. This will be repeated in companies all over the US. And for those that can just outsource to other countries instead? See ya later jobs.

So many of y’all’s hypotheticals involve people getting their feelings hurt.
“What about the guy who worked his way up to $16? How’s he gonna FEEL?!?”
“What about the people who paid off their student loans? AREN’T THEY GOING TO FEEL BAD?!?”
The market will adjust. Companies aren’t going to completely out price their customers just to partially protect profits. Companies aren’t going to shut down because they might have to pay a cashier a couple extra bucks an hour five years from now.
