If it is such a bad deal for the US, we should have no opinion or problem with Canada seeking similar arrangements with China, the EU, etc., right?

EU. No problem at all.

Someone posted in a response with Mexico coming to an agreement, the US will likely kill USMCA aka CUSMA (in Canada).

Correct …. it is believed that the US will trigger a 6-month Notice clause within USMCA as soon as the US-Mexico bilateral is ratified, which will wrap up in early Oct.

Carney is crazy if he doesn’t use the next 2-3 weeks to reengage negotiations…. in good faith this time.

Look SFP. If losing trade with Canada sinks us as a country then stick a fork in us. I am not going to weep for past relationships lost with Canada. Their leader is hostile to the US. And they are unyielding with trade. So again, I'm not going to cry about love lost. They can diversify their trading partners, build pipelines and export crappy oil somewhere else and hang out with the Euros. It wasn't a long time ago they were a vestigial organ of England anyway. I don't think they will break us. Let's see how we can enrich Central and South America.
If they do something stupid to upset our doctrines to not meddle with unfavorable partners in our hemisphere, they will pay some price. All the while they will yap and yap and yap.

I never said it would "sink us" but it will hurt us.

A scenario where we lose our relationship with Canada and they pivot to the EU and China makes the EU and China stronger. We lose both domestically and in terms of our competitors.

It's not going to "sink us" but will put us in a more -EV position.

This admin made him hostile and we are unyielding with our trade war

Let's see how we can enrich Central and South America.

There are few, if any, countries south of Mexico that can begin to dream of replacing Canada.

Brazil would be the only one close in terms of total GDP, but their SOL/PCGDP and outputs can't compete with a developed country like Canada.

You have to go all the way down to Argentina at 26 and they're an economic basket case and not reliable. Their total GDP is also about 1/4 of Canada's.

There is also the secondary effects of a stronger EU-China-Canada relationship that removes the need for US exports down the line. That would be incredibly bad for us.

We rejected them. Why do you think we get to tell them who they can trade with after we force a divorce?

I’m laughing at the perspective (or lack thereof) shown by SFP and Bunk in this thread. “Trump started this, … he’s a meanie”.

They conveniently omit that Canada’s continued and persistent abuse of the transnational shipment requirements within our current trade agreement. China was exerting its will over Canada to circumvent existing US trade restrictions. This isn’t new, it isn’t a surprise, and neither are the US objections to such trade abuses.

If Canada wanted to preserve its trade with China, then they shouldn’t have done so at the direct expense of the US.

Furthermore, this is a hard socialist country that we’ve been allowing to do this. The sad part is that ordinary Canadian citizens are severely gaslit by their state-controlled media. They have no idea that Carney and Freedland have been selling them out for years.

Carney is hyper- focused on Trump.
Trump doesn’t think about Carney at all.

….he’s thinking globally, strategically.

Our trade war is causing more direct expense to the US and as we lose ties and trade with Canada, that grows even larger.

There are the buzz words

If Canada is taking advantage of the US, how is that behavior "selling out" Canadian citizens? You're arguing against your own points.

Or are you going to double down on the buzzwords and argue only the "globalists" are benefiting?

Donald Trump Truth Social post from September 9, 2026:

quote:

If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a “Drop Off Port” for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life. If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

I don't cry in my beer. I hope we don't. They aren't coming back so we have to move ahead. We aren't at fault in this. There is equal blame. And now there is spite. And believe it or not, the EU has no military, they are not a military power. What they have is provided collectively by NATO. I'll exclude Finland and Sweden from this. So Europe needs us. And if they act up for two years, we will be in a very different place when they get their precious democrat president. So yeah, Europe needs the superpower.

We were in good faith negotiations with them. And then they turned and left the table. TDS plays well in Canada. I was just there and they tolerate us. But while brusque, Trump did not walk away. So who has to blink, Canada or us? Canada didn't blink and neither did we. And in the mean time, the EU is in no position to alienate the US with shenanigans. Because many in the US can see what is going on there. And for the record, Canada is close to having state sponsored press. So propaganda works there.

Good relations with Canada should be the easiest layup ever. But, this administration has to have a terrible relationship and scrap over everything.

We only have problems with China and Canada.

China is understandable.

Canada just wants a free ride.

And Carney is selling Canada out for globalists profits.

Like you he is screwing his people while promoting Trump hate.

Canada cross docking 75 billion of chinese goods and exporting them to the US was not part of the deal nor was it celebrated by Trump.

This "associate member" of EU is simply a made up title, it means nothing.

Countries have been waiting for years to clear all the hurdles to join the EU, if Canada tried to jump the line you would have many current members, as well as those still waiting, very annoyed.

Canada would not do it anyway, as has been mentioned here, joining the EU would require far more than what the US is asking.
