Trump's problem is that he is too easily impressed, and believes people too easily.
All it took was a few good-sounding words by Dictator Xi, and Trump was convinced and persuaded - "yep China is doing things great, Xi is great."
The guy swallows things too easily.

JULY 2019 - The CDC lab in Beijing is reduced from 47 people to 14. Among the cuts are the epidemiologist embedded in China’s disease control agency.
NOVEMBER 2019 - "U.S. intel (learns) a contagion was sweeping through China’s Wuhan region, changing the patterns of life and business and posing a threat to the population ... The report was the result of analysis of wire and computer intercepts, coupled with satellite images ... Analysts concluded it could be a cataclysmic event."
JANUARY 3 - after a call from doctors in China, the CDC and the National Security Council have an emergency meeting. "This is a very big deal."
JANUARY 5 - WHO publishes a "Disease Outbreak" risk assessment "on the cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan."
JANUARY 12 - China publishes the genetic sequence of COVID-19, a full week "after three different government labs had fully decoded the information."
JANUARY 13 - WHO reports that the virus has spread beyond China.
JANUARY 17 - China finally turns over detailed data on patients and cases, and reports widespread human to human transmission.
JANUARY 18 - the CDC dispatches 100 people to three American airports to screen travelers from Wuhan. Azar briefs Trump, who is playing golf.
JANUARY 21 - First case in the US, with dozens of new cases confirmed in Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and France
JANUARY 21 – CDC: "This is an evolving situation and again, we do expect additional cases in the United States"
JANUARY 22 - The true mortality rate is still unknown, but has quickly risen to 4% of reported cases.
Trump: “China is in very good shape.”
CNBC: “Are there worries about a pandemic”
Trump: “No, not at all. We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.”
CNBC: “Do you trust that we’re going to know everything we need to know from China?”
Trump: “I do. I have a great relationship with President Xi."
JANUARY 22 - Wuhan (pop: 11M) is the first city to be locked down. In the next few days, China will quarantine 16 cities and 56 million people. Other new cases are confirmed in the US, the UK, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore.
JANUARY 22 - Trump: "Yes, we have one person right now, as you know, quarantined, and we got lucky, actually. But, we're in great shape. We have -- CDC did a fantastic job. Immediately got the person and we think we're in good shape. And I think China's in good shape too, by the way."
JANUARY 24 - CDC: "Expect more cases in the U.S. including human-to-human transmission.”

JANUARY 25 - China reports the outbreak is accelerating and is being spread by “hidden carriers.”
JANUARY 25 - “At least five cases were also reported in Hong Kong, two in Macau.”
the travel ban, btw, does not include Hong Kong and Macau, and at least 8,000 Chinese citizens have flown back and forth to the US.
JANUARY 26 - China now has 56M people now under quarantine, but the mayor of Wuhan says five million left before travel was restricted.
JANUARY 29 - Trump: "I think our relationship with China now might be the best it's been in a long, long time."
JANUARY 29 - Massive nationwide PPE shortages begin.
JANUARY 29 - White House memo outlines "a full-blown pandemic, imperiling the lives of millions of Americans.”
JANUARY 30 - Trump: “We think we have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment — five — and those people are all recuperating successfully. But we’re working very closely with China and other countries, and we think it’s going to have a very good ending for us … that I can assure you.”
JANUARY 30 - One day BEFORE trump announces his travel ban, airlines suspend service to China on their own, including United, Delta, American Airlines, British Airways, Air Seoul, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Air Asia, Air India, Air Canada, All Nippon, Asiana Airlines and Korean Air.
JANUARY 30 - WHO declares a global emergency as new cases confirmed in India, Philippines, Russia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Singapore, the US, the UAE and Vietnam.
JANUARY 31 - Trumps travel ban from parts of China is announced. It will take effect in 2 days.
HANNITY - Coronavirus ... how concerned are you?
TRUMP - Well, we pretty much shut it down coming in from China. We have a tremendous relationship with China, which is a very positive thing ... So we're gonna see what happens, but we did shut it down, yes.
FEBRUARY 2 - the travel ban from parts of China begins. Among the many loopholes, it excludes American citizens and their families, who still flew back and forth. You could even fly there for an adoption. It also only applied to direct flights, and thousands were able to fly to the US from China by making a stop somewhere first. When they arrived, only a small fraction are screened or quarantined.

There should have been restrictions on high risk populations, like the elderly, nursing home residents and employees. Everyone else should have been allowed to make their own choices.
So the elderly shouldn't be allowed to make their own choices? They should have to spend their final years on house arrest? I don't agree. Everyone should be able to make their own choice.

quote:Preach.
First, to whatever extent the board was littered with "won't be worse than the flu," let's not forget that in the end, that suggestion is substantially more accurate than the BS being preached at the time by the other side of the debate. Remember 10% mortality? Or 7%. Do we have 5%? Remember "no less than 10x flu mortality" (I believe that was Fauci) - so whose "hot takes" have been proven disastrously wrong?
Moreover, there's a difference between arguing the virus should be completely ignored and the virus should be kept in perspective. I've been exceedingly skeptical of nearly everything we've done in response to the virus, but have never suggested the virus wasn't real or very deadly for the folks most at risk.
Lastly, IMO it should bother more people that we still develop and report data like gospel that is simply inaccurate.
quote:Keep preaching. And to be very clear - this is a MAJOR thing Trump fricked up on. If the intent is mostly federalism, then it's actually sort of all he could have done. Guidance from the top and making sure info was coherent. The daily press briefings were the opposite of that.
So at the top of my list of things Trump could have done is to have directed the establishment of COVID metrics with clear (and transparent) standards and reporting procedures. In addition to that, he should have had a group of experts advising him/the country on the human cost of the mandates/lockdowns as they were recommended/adopted. That's fully half of the COVID discussion that in the end might matter most, yet it pretty much hasn't even started.

I’ve been thinking about this, SFP, and the one thing that didn’t happen and still hasn’t happened is that I have received exactly zero help removing the piles of dead bodies lining my street and blocking my driveway - still!
But I take at least some comfort in knowing that if (and God willing, when ) this scourge ends and we have a cure, no one will ever die for any reason ever again...

is that a serious question?
because it was them.
by a mile.
The mortality rate for seasonal flu in the US is around 0.1 percent.
mortality rate for COVID in the US is at 3.3 percent.
"Using a more sophisticated calculation called the infection-fatality rate, paired with the past few months’ worth of data, the latest best estimates show that COVID-19 is around 50 to 100 times more lethal than the seasonal flu, on average." - natgeo
(and no, before you ask, I dont "Remember 10% mortality? Or 7%. Do we have 5%?". if you wanna link someone saying that, cool. we were at 6% in May, fwiw)

Math isn't a conspiracy, either. You're an order of magnitude off in yours. That's why you're being laughed at.

President call for short term shutdown to allow time for Federal Government to prepare.
Block all flights coming to US - immediately... in March
Publically call for Lockdown all nursing homes and provide needed PPE to states for implementation - DAY 1.
Provide protocols for Independent Living facilities that are in an apartment style buildings (which in AL the Governor has still not done). Provide needed PPE to the states for implementation.
Provide needed to PPE to states for elderly adults over the age of 80 who have care givers - including N95 masks (which in AL the Governor has still not done).
After the short shutdown for prep, open the economy completely back up.
Encourage people to wear masks and social distance and provide stats that help DAs understand that it makes a difference.

Well, a consistent message first off. Taking the virus seriously. Yes, he did a good thing stopping Travelers from China early, he did a good thing in stopping the EU from traveling here early on. The big thing here to me is this, why was it left solely up to the states? Each state took a completely different approach, I would have liked to have seen a more unified response and approach. One single lockdown, for 21 days nationwide to nip this thing. Leave the mask out of it, keep social distancing for multiple reasons, and we’d be in a good position now.
