A Connecticut state trooper who is a native of Poland got quite the surprise while responding to an SUV with a flat tire Wednesday — a passenger in the vehicle happened to be former Polish President Lech Walesa.

State police said Trooper Lukasz Lipert arrived to the call in Tolland and was greeted by Walesa, who had spoken in Hartford on Tuesday as part of his U.S. tour advocating for aid for refugees who have fled Ukraine during the war with Russia.

Lipert, 35, who came to the U.S. when he was 18, told The Hartford Courant that he spoke with Walesa in Polish about their homeland and the anti-communist movement Walesa helped lead.

“It was definitely a great opportunity to meet the man who had a voice during those times,” Lipert said. “It was definitely a great experience."

Walesa, 78, led the nationwide Solidarity movement in Poland in the 1980s that eventually toppled Poland's communist leaders through an election in 1989. He received a Nobel Prize in 1983 and served as Poland's first popularly elected president from 1990 to 1995. He is a strong critic of Poland's current right-wing government.

In my area of OK they stop for flat tire breakdowns or anything.

They're hyper-militant and looking for any reason to snoop into your business. Back when I still smoked, I had pulled over for a cigarette off the interstate on a side street near Big Cabin and they rolled up on me 3 deep out of nowhere, and gave me the N'th degree. Had to explain that I'd been on the road nonstop since St. Louis without a smoke.

I wasn't blocking the road or breaking any laws but they damn sure wanted to know the scoop. If I had a flat at the time, they'd have probably just driven past.

I bet that part is conjecture. I have several friends who grew up in Poland and to a man they are the farthest right-wingers I know. They make Trump look like a centrist.

Not to be rude, but are multiple $40billion payments not enough?

the government is going to be handing out that money to themselves. Sure it might buy bullets and bombs, but the citizens aren't going to see it.

our church is a partner with a few churches in Kyiv through Dnipro. Been training pastors and giving in missions for almost 20 years. My son's girlfriend's dad (that's a mouthful) just got back from Poland coordinating with the pastors that made it out of Kyiv. Quite a few of them are debating coming over here to permanently escape being in the area with a corrupt government (including Zelinskyy) and Russia as an ongoing threat. There's a crapton of Ukranian people in Poland that are debating sticking it out or moving West permanently. no right answer, but that's the situation. If Russia wins and NATO doesn't do anything afterwards, most of them don't want to live under Putin's regime.

One of my heroes. The only public servant, that I know, who ever served his people and DID NOT leave office as a multimillionaire.

President Walesa looks great. Welcome to America President Walesa. Maybe you could warn us about the evils of communism given the illegal President Joe Biden et al is doing all he can to lead us into marxism.

Solidarity forever.
