I had started watching a show on netflix that shows the border agents on the Canadian border. I hadn't ever really knew that they were allowed to look through peoples phones.

When I got here in Trinidad we had a salesman who had stolen quite a bit. I found out his wife had just died in childbirth (the company paid for the wake), and he had given the kid to his sister in law.
Hmm, young guy, no ties, flush with cash, on a hunch I called the US embassy, and yes junior had applied for a Visa. I told them the story and they said I can red line him here in Trinidad, OR red line him in the states so he can waste a ticket and be humiliated. I opted for the former.
My point is, sounds like they were indeed waiting on this fella, it had nothing to do with his cell phone messages.

good job by ICE sounds like he got caught on social media saying the truth about coming here intending to stay permanently and they rightly booted him for it.
he admitted he was coming here with no intention to ever leave so they were just doing their jobs correctly for taking those actions and laughing at him for being stupid enough to post it on social media is something we would all do so spare me the pity party about being mocked
