Rick Burgess and most of his family sound like pretty shitty people.

As a parent, I will never understand those who can ostracize or distance themselves from their children because they are gay.

The post where you disparaged a father because his kid died and he talks to people about it? I don't think you should keep drawing attention to it.

Are you expecting the guy not to take speaking fees or sell books? Do you hold everyone who has gone through a tragedy to this standard, or just this guy?

Sometimes the best thing for your child is to distance yourself from them. Good parenting does not equal allowing your child to do whatever they want with no consequences.

Christian beliefs

Sport, its evolutionary as well. What separates a straight man, from a gay one? The desire to root around in another mans butthole. That's it. Because either man can get a bj, or handjob from a woman. But when it comes time to wrap your beef, there are two completely separate areas involved

In a hetero man, the area is instinctive. A way for continuation of his species

In a gay man, there is no purpose. Nature provides many restrictions: The terrible odor, the overwhelming number of highly infectious diseases, the lack of natural lubricant leading to cell damage which results in the mixing of blood with contaminants

Its not because of the Bible, or perhaps its in the Bible because of all the problems it has caused for previous generations. And its also a rebellious act. Doing something that you are told you cant.

Rick never mentioned it specifically publicly that I am aware of. They did not discuss it on the show until after her piece was released.

He does love her. He and his wife (her step-mother) talked about everything on the show this morning. He made sure to mention, multiple times, that he loved her and always will. However, Rick made the point that just because he loves her, it doesn't mean that he can let her views (which he views as being against the Biblical teaching) on the matter change his.

I also want to point out that Rick is not trying to distance himself from his daughter. I guess one could choose not to believe him, but he says that she won't talk to her family (some limited texting, but that's all). Brandi lives in Philadelphia, and in order for them to talk to her, his wife had to go visit her uninvited and unannounced.

See my point about being too wrapped up being the sexiest fat men alive to raise your kids.

There is some complete and utter ignorance in this thread.

Rick was not at the home when the drowning occurred. He was in Gatlinburg speaking at an event.

First of all, let's be clear: Parents who do this do so because of the social consequences a fay child brings for THEM. In my experience it is never, ever about helping the child.

Second, there's nothing noble about stiff-arming your kid because they are attracted to people of the same sex. Trying to equate that to something like say, drug abuse or regular criminal activity in general is unbelievably sad and pathetic.

I'm not sure if you are trying to prove or refute my point.

Look. People make mistakes. I think it is incorrect for Rick in this circumstance to belittle his daughter without some level of introspection about how it came to this. Raise up a child in the way he should go and he will follow it all the days of his life.

The biggest problem with this is it is always about the parent(s), never the child. It's about the embarrassment the PARENTS experience at church and among friends, its about how they see it as reflecting poorly on THEIR parenting abilities, etc.

I can tell you from personal experience that you have no idea what you are talking about. I can tell you that as long as I've been in the restaurant industry, I regularly saw and waited on him and his entire family dining together. I can remember when his child that died was just a tiny baby. I can remember him acting up and Rick correcting him. I can even remember when his daughter in the op ed was a young child herself. They were just a regular family to me. Since his son died though, I can't say that I've seen him or the family out anywhere. I can't imagine how anyone could deal with losing a child.

How do you know he hast done that?

Frankly she is just playing the victim here and wants a look at how brave I am moment. They have never brought up her Sexuality on the show. She admits to this. He has a different opinion than her on the matter of sexuality. He had the common decency to leave their differences between them. She decided to try and gain sympathy from strangers by blasting this to the public.

Many fundamentalist Christians, some of whom might be on this board, share this behavior with a majority of Muslims. The Christians even believe that God once hated gays so much he ordered them put to death, but changed his mind after God decided to kill his son, Jesus, who was also God, and who chose to die instead of fighting Daddy God, so that folks who lived afterwards could forgive "sinners". No wonder the girl is fricked up.

They certainly don't to me. I don't listen to the show, but I have walked by their office on the way to a job recruiting office before and they apparently have a crowd sitting in on their show every day. Apparently a lot of people care what they have to say.

All I'm saying is he gets paid to talk about his opinions, and as far as I can tell he has not brought her name into those opinions on air so a public rebuke from her was not necessary. Her simply being his daughter does not change the validity of his opinions no matter what spin she puts on it.

My personal opinion is that Brandi took the opportunity that AL.com gave her to smear her father. She took something private, and made it public, he did not. She won't speak to him, but yet she is willing to write a public op-ed for everyone to read. An op-ed in which she shares her views about him and his views without him being able to respond.

AL.com has long had a bone to pick with Rick, especially now that he favors the conservative Yellowhammer News. AL.com took advantage of their situation in order to take their own personal shot at Rick, which is evidence by the accompanying AL.com article written on the matter by AL.com's John Archibald.
