New York (CNN Business)President Trump's Thursday night convention speech making the case for his reelection was lower-rated than his challenger Joe Biden's speech one week ago, according to overnight Nielsen ratings.

About 21.6 million viewers watched coverage of Trump's RNC address across nine cable and broadcast networks, down from 23.6 million viewers who watched Biden's DNC address on the same nine networks.

The totals may fluctuate slightly when final numbers are released later in the day, but Biden clearly edged out Trump.

The Democratic convention was also higher-rated than the Republican convention overall when the audience for all four days is tallied up.

Sorry, it is CNN

So let me get this straight... The convention ended last night at 12:30 EST and they already have viewership numbers and it's only 2:16PM EST?

They are failing to account for his online viewers.

I would also assume a lot of people just tuned in to biden to see if he would survive his speech while not actually giving a crap what he was going to say

Full numbers don't actually come out until 4pm. If the GOP got 21 million in preliminary numbers they will beat the DNC total viewership when they are published later this afternoon.

Such obvious horse shite.

Just trying to get their demoralized base to put down the needle and get up off the floor...

This is massive as people are tuning out the cable news channels. I watched online, and I know others that did as well

It's what we have come to expect from dishonest CNN. They will report Trump's preliminary numbers to Binden's final numbers. Then when final numbers are out for Trump at 4PM, CNN will go silent on the story.

If I were the media, I would be keeping Dem voters away from open windows for a while.

Yeah, I am going by how the Biden campaign is scrambling to change some of his earlier stances concerning some issues. Also, the full on press of negative messaging taking place. They are getting their arse licked and they know it.

What percentage of viewers, streamers, etc does this cover? Honest question - I don't know. I feel like people watched both conventions differently this year than traditionally.

What the ratings reveal compared to last year is the high majority of Americans took a pass on the two trash-talking political conventions. Americans are tired of all of Trump's divisive tweets, speeches, etc. Pelosi announced Biden should not debate Trump this week, which Trump and Fox News took the bait. Biden is lowering debate expectations and letting Trump do all the boasting and trash-talking which Americans are tired of hearing. As Roger Ailes of Fox News said many times, overexposure will kill any candidate running for office.

Day 2 of the GOP convention actually surpassed the viewership in 2016 and that wasn't even factoring in online viewership which is significantly higher now than 4 years ago. Day 3 was down but it was also the night that Laura hit the Gulf Coast so it makes sense that viewership would be down then. Last night is looking really good for the GOP though and while it won't have higher ratings than 2016 - when something like 32 million people watched the Trump acceptance speech - it will be probably be the highest viewership of the week and beat the Dems.

People hated the television coverage with the TV hosts talking over the people giving their speeches.

Tv ratings likely fell over the course of the week as more and more people stayed watching online.

CNN knows this but it doesn't back their narrative.
