Minister of Home Affairs Walton Brown said the legislation signed by Gov. John Rankin seeks to balance opposition to same-sex marriage on the socially conservative island while complying with European court rulings that ensure recognition and protection for same-sex couples in the territory.
Bermuda’s Senate and House of Assembly passed the legislation by wide margins in December and a majority of voters opposed same-sex marriage in a referendum.
“The act is intended to strike a fair balance between two currently irreconcilable groups in Bermuda, by restating that marriage must be between a male and a female while at the same time recognizing and protecting the rights of same-sex couples,” Brown said.
LGBTQ civil rights groups said that domestic partnerships amount to a second-class status and that it is unprecedented for a jurisdiction to take away the legal right to marriage after it has been granted.

I have no issue with this. Prior to Obergefeld, polls time and time again showed that the majority of people, even evangelicals, were supportive of homosexual domestic partnerships, but were unsupportive of homosexual marriage.
Most of the debate was not over tax benefits or adoption rights, but actually semantics. Simply changing the words from marriage to domestic partnership for all seems entirely logical. Therefor "marriage" is just a religious sacrament or social custom, i.e. purely in the eyes of the participants...where it should be.

Nice. Good to see some countries actually care about what their people care about while not caring about the backlash from sexual deviants wanting to change cultural traditions to normalize their behaviors.

The entire goal of homosexual 'marriages' was not to elevate the 'homosexual hookup' but rather to deminish the concept of marriage itself.
It was just another step in the destruction of the nuclear family. The 'progressive' movement depends on breeders not families.

"A Christian teacher in Bristol was fired and reported as a “radicalisation threat” after she answered questions from pupils about her beliefs, an employment tribunal has heard.
Svetlana Powell was dismissed from the T2 Apprenticeship Academy in Bristol in July 2016 after leaders at the government-funded college said students had been offended by comments the teacher made.
Bristol Employment Tribunal heard that a pupil who was being persistently disruptive brought up Mrs. Powell’s religion and proceeded to quiz her on her personal beliefs in an “argumentative” way, LifeSiteNews reported.
Asked her views on homosexuality, the teacher said that as a Christian, she “personally” believed homosexual activity was against the Lord’s will, but that God loves every person regardless of their sexual preference.
The same student, who had been warned about his misbehaviour throughout the day, told Mrs. Powell that another pupil in the class was a lesbian, to which the teacher replied that God loved her."
