Those people literally only leave when they pass away.
Jim DeMint is the only one I can recall who self term limited and willingly stepped away early.

I'd get elected and serve the minimum amount of time to get that lifetime pension and walk the frick away. Then I'd write a book exposing everything I could prove.

I still think it's the Eddie Robinson Syndrome. He coached Grambling football for almost 60 years. He didn't need the money. He was getting senile and his teams were losing. But he was convinced that if he retired he would die immediately.

A good friend of mine served 16 years in the House of Representatives and moved on at that point of his own accord. He was popular in our district as well.

A lot of people are upset with Mitch including me for his voting record. However, whatever he is doing right now is protecting his seat from Dem Gov Andy Brashear. Mitch's seat is up for election in Nov and he is not running for re-election.
Dont think for a microsecond that Brashear will do anything that helps Trump/MAGA/GOP. He is a dyed in the wool Dem and deceit is his primary weapon.
KY has 120 counties and most are rural. Brashear won less than 10 of them in the KY Gov race but they were all the urban downtown counties.

1st... I doubt Mitch is doing anything.
2nd... I'm pretty sure a few KY residents on this board have said Beshear couldn't do anything, that the seat would be up to the republican legislature.
I'm not 100% sure of KY politics, but I tend to trust the KY posters that have said it isn't true that Beshear would be selecting the fill in.
Even so- lack of accountability and transparency is not something to be applauded or appreciated no matter which side is doing it.

The Senate was originally set up to serve at the pleasure of the state legislatures. Repeal and replace the 17th Amendment.

That is not guaranteed. Beshear is already fighting it the background that he can still appoint the seat. Nobody on the GOP side trusts him which is why the KY state legislature modified rules so he could not but this has not been tested.
At this point McConnell's seat goes up for election in Nov. To call a special election now would be ludicrous to think it can be done with qualifying, campaigning, and actual election before then. This just creates a mountain of confusion in a process that is already well in progress.
edit: I forgot to add that I emphatically want to see him gone like everyone else.
