It’s a pretty stupid idea. Which compromise is he talking about? Slavery? States declaring themselves independent?

but I do think there is a question of whether compromise was possible.

it was in 1820 and 1850. It wasn't for a lack of effort by Crittenden and Douglas.

Still, by that point, probably not. Even if Lincoln and the Republicans had agreed to an amendment preserving slavery where it existed as of 1860, without the ability to expand into the territories, it would have been a death sentence for slavery, plus, how can you reconcile that with the 5th Amendment?

Still, his point was correct and is not racist.

Goddamn...I hate people.

The Corwin Amendment was in 1861.

Which was proposed after the southern states started to secede.

Meanwhile roughly 500 black people lose their lives at the hands of other black people each week and thousands of black babies are born into fatherless homes during the same period. But let’s focus on finding racism in his statements. I swear, if these people would just put the same amount of energy into black on black violent crime and fatherless black households, they just might make a difference. I am not trying to disparage the black community, as the majority of blacks are good people. But it is what it is.

The irony is the south fricked themselves on slavery.

They wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Once it was codified into law that blacks were 3/5 of a person, it opened the door to making them full persons. Shouldn't have gotten greedy and wanted them to count for representation in Congress

This is the oldest statement of nothing ever. Answer this. State's right to do what?

Mainly when Lincoln was elected he basically said no more compromise. Part of the platform he ran on was that no new states would ever allow slavery.
and that would be handled through legislation. Something every state in the Union signed up for.

South: we want to own human beings as property.

North: you cannot own human beings as property.

Where is the compromise I'm missing?

This. There was 0 compromise to be had. It was time to join the civilised 1st world and some fat cats in the South didn't want to give up the way of life that made them wealthy. They disguised it as state's rights but in truth they were all just shitty humans.

Eta: I don't think Kelly is a racist for the comments either. He respects the generals choice to fight for their side. But he is flat out wrong if he thinks there was any way to compromise short of allowing the state's to choose whether they own another person.

Nothing but trying to change the news cycle. Kelly is smart and looks at the long term and not just the short term news cycle.

Do to the fact we don’t know the entire story about the Civil War and never will. The losing side does not get the entire story recorded correctly Kelly is talking out of his arse. He is just speculating from what history books have recorded.

We know the entire story.

Your refusal to accept that it was about slavery doesn't change that fact.
