What does the PT board think of his comments?
The response?

Wurzelbacher, who became something of a celebrity during the 2008 presidential campaign after a debate between President Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain, recently wrote an open letter to the parents of the University of California, Santa Barbara, college students who were killed earlier this month.
"As harsh as this sounds — your dead kids don't trump my Constitutional rights," Wurzelbacher wrote on BarbWire.com.
quote:
Wurzelbacher wrote, "Mr. Martinez and anyone calling for more restrictions on American’s rights need to back off and stop playing into the hands of the folks who merely capitalize on these horrific events for their own political ends."
The response?
quote:
Lafferty, whose mother, Dawn Hochsprung, was the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary and one of 27 victims of the massacre, responded, "I’m sorry my loss inconveniences you, Joe. But you’re the one who’s out of touch."
quote:
Lafferty, in her op-ed, wrote, "It’s actually refreshing to see his [Wurzelbacher's] comments so unvarnished, so closely removed from this poor kid’s murder. And I wouldn’t have dignified his disgusting comments with a response if it didn’t follow such a disturbing pattern among gun extremists in this country."

Who the frick does that?

Were the parents making statements in support of suppressing the rights of gun ownership?
If they were not, then I agree it is crazy to for Joe to do such a thing.
On the other hand, if they were using their grief as a platform to make a political statement, then a response was needed.

He's an idiot and if he doesn't want to be attacked, he should keep his mouth shut.

Looks like he was responding. From JTP's letter:
The Actual Letter (Easy read)
quote:
Richard Martinez, whose son (Christopher) was among the murdered, choked back tears at a news conference, blaming politicians the next day: “The talk about gun rights. What about Chris’ right to live?” Martinez said – and much more.
There are no critical words for a grieving father. He can say whatever he wants and blame whoever he’d like – it’s okay by me. You can’t take a step in his shoes – at least I can’t.
But the words and images of Mr. Martinez blaming “the proliferation of guns”, lobbyists, politicians, etc.; will be exploited by gun-grab extremists as are all tragedies involving gun violence and the mentally ill by the anti-Second Amendment Left.

That was a pretty tacky move.
There are better ways of getting your point across than that.
I'm very pro 2nd Amendment FWIW, but I'm also for good manners and decorum.

On matters of national import, I don't feel like I can make an informed decision until Joe the Freaking Plumber has weighed in.

It does feel that way, but I think it is good that it was said.
Instead of merely grieving his child the parent decided to make it a political statement and Joe responded to that political statement.

Some people are just stupid attention whores.. Joe the Plumber being one of them..

Please. The parent was in grief and shock. I think he gets more of a pass than Joe does for talking about his "dead kids".
If a loved one of yours is killed by a drunk driver, something tells me you're going to be in favor of really draconian DWI laws. Doesn't mean it's going to happen and it doesn't mean I'm not a complete douche for writing you an open letter a week later saying "Tough shite".

I would think my kids right to live would trump your right to drive. I would be against peoples right to own cars.

I did not take his words as that.

Yea the political statement deserves a response. If my kids were shot in a mass murder I wouldn't be out making political statements. I'd be devastated but I also know I have enough sense to realize it isn't the fault of the gun lobby or gun owners
Posted on 5/30/14 at 4:40 pm to weagle99
That's a pretty dickish thing to do... especially how he worded it.

So where'd you publish your "open letter"?

I am sure there is point to that question, but you did a masterful job of hiding it.

The point lies in my original question in this thread.

Shouldn't this thread title be "Joe the Plumber goes after Antigun crowd?"

Nah, that's not even what he did. That would be e bit less head scratching, I suppose.
