I think the point is that the guy probably isn't thinking logically and seeing as his kid just got killed can probably be excused for that.

You're seriously having an issue with this dad not crafting a logical argument and commending Joe the Plumber in effect tweaking him about his "dead kids"?

"Logical line". Where do some of y'all come up with this BS?

He had no business sending that letter to devastated parents. He should've chosen a better venue to voice his opinion.

But then again, these grieving people and opportunists should expect shite like this when they take advantage of a tragedy to push an agenda they wouldn't have the muster to do under normal circumstances.

This. Political opportunists love a victim because it makes them immune from criticism. (See Obama).

It is bad about the parents' losses, but they should also not use this crime as a platform.

Here is a direct quote from the father of one of the victims:

quote:

Martinez, a 60-year-old criminal defense lawyer, took center stage in the gun debate when he showed up uninvited before a sheriff's news conference a day after the May 23 killings, stepped before a bank of microphones and in a voice filled with rage and grief blamed the death of Christopher Michaels-Martinez on "craven, irresponsible politicians" who won't pass stricter gun-control laws.

My sympathy for the guy rapidly evaporates when he starts advocating gun control. Step into the political area, prepare for some level of backlash.

ETA:

quote:

Martinez, however, said he just can't fathom the proliferation of high-powered, semi-automatic weapons in American society.

quote:

That's why he said he won't blame the parents of his son's killer. It's also why he'll keep demanding reasonable gun control.

Yep, it appears that Mr. Martinez has become my political adversary.

I hope you never step into the "arena of a sons death" with microphones then stuck in your smug face minutes later!

He chose to attend the press conference, he chose to step to the podium and he chose to make a political statement.

Once he makes a political statement he is fair game for people to disagree with him. Tragedy does not make one an expert and it sure as hell doesn't mean other people have to agree.

Not trying to be a hard arse, but tragedy doesn't mean one is qualified to set policy.

Don't know if you are pro-gun or not, but if so, this Martinez fellow will now be working to reduce your freedoms apparently. Just like Sarah Brady, Mark Kelly, and others.

Martinez said, "we're all to blame" for his son's death.

No we're not. That little spoiled POS twirp is the one to blame.

There would be a way to tastefully disagree with the man. Just express sympathy for his loss, but point out that his anger is misdirected. Law abiding gun owners had nothing to do with this tragedy, and you would be happy to work with him to pass laws to deal with people running loose like this nut.

I don't have it all figured out, but gun rights are my political line in the sand.

My sympathy for this man rapidly vanishes the more he tries to 'blame' me for something I didn't do and works to limit my freedom in the process.

Agree, and I think JTP did a poor job with his wording.

Why not pass a law that makes it illegal to shoot other people?

I hope the day soon comes where people who are being attacked because of their conservative political beliefs decide to stand up and give these people a hearty F You
