i mean.. obviously this dumbass was swinging to hit the student behind the teacher and caught the teacher. not that it matters

Unfortunately, I think you're right.
I wasn't around in the 50s or 60s, but I'm sure this would have been the expected response to an unruly student. Times have changed for the worst.

As the risk mgr for a 100 - school school district I gave a risk manager speech to the teachers at each school. In response to a question from a large black P.E. teacher : "when do I have the right to defend myself ?" I recited school board policy: "when a fist is right in front of your face". Numerous law suits led to this policy.
