Why are property taxes a State of Georgia issue?

Honest question.
Each county assesses value, sets mileage, collects, and disburses funds.

Who is the dumbass that doesn't know property tax is a county issue and made this a campaign promise this election cycle?

I couldn't get past the donation to Liz Chaney after she voted to impeach Donald Trump.

The secondary issue is his multiple request to Jones to endorse him as a friend just prior to putting in his bid to run for governor.

On top of that, he's in healthcare.

He comes off as used car salesman as it gets.

here's an example:

AI Overview

The State of Missouri intervened in Jackson County's property tax controversies following illegal and dramatically inflated 2023 property assessments. State officials forced the county to roll back unlawful valuations and launched audits revealing that the county's assessment and appeals process violated state law.

That isn't the campaign promise in Georgia.

There are already laws on the books for assessing and appeals. That has nothing to do with "capping property taxes".

Kemp ran ads on him using his pickup truck to round up illegals. Didn't really work out like that.

It goes deeper than that...
quote:

State Auditor’s Scathing Report: An audit released by Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick gave Jackson County’s 2023 property tax appeals process a "poor" rating. The audit found that the county’s Board of Equalization violated state law by unfairly placing the burden of proof on taxpayers rather than county assessors, lacking transparency, and failing to provide timely hearing notices.

State Law Violations: State investigations concluded the county failed to conduct mandatory physical inspections for properties with valuation increases of 15% or more, misled homeowners, and failed to issue proper notices.

Having the court elections on the same day as the primaries scares me because turnout is much lower for primaries than for general election.

It doesn't even make sense to have the general election for the courts now.

You failed to explain how it goes deeper.

Lol

This thread is about Georgia elections.
State politicians are campaigning to freeze property taxes (without explanation to what that means).

State politicians have nothing to do with property taxes.

That is like me telling you how much money you can spend. And the term "freeze" has spending implications 10, 20, and 30 years down the road.

I think the Republicans are trying to squash the seemingly annual property tax increases by the Democrats that run the metro Atlanta counties.

Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing state income taxes eliminated and property taxes either cut drastically or eliminated. Then increase state and county level sales taxes to offset the losses. That way you don't have freeloaders who don't own property or make enough annual income skating by without contributing. You would also make $$$ off out of towners who come in for conferences, sporting events, etc. Spread the revenue burden around some.

Didn't Kemp do (or try to do) the same thing when he ran the first time? I seem to remember there being a complaint or lawsuit about him running for governor while still being the secretary of state and responsible for elections.

Sales taxes do not pay for schools.

Freezing property taxes will freeze payrolls.
Tell the health insurance companies that they can't increase their rates because the school payroll sum is frozen.

This is literally the most retarded idea I have seen from republicans in my lifetime.

For the record, I like freezing property taxes for 62+ year olds. But that decision should be made at the local county level. Not state level.

And I am 100% in favor of no state income tax. Sales tax absolutely can offset this. And Atlanta/Georgia will start competing with Texas/Tennessee/Florida for corporate hubs.

Yes but the problem with Democrats being upset about that was Cathy Cox (a Democrat) did the exact same thing before Kemp did so the precedent had already been set and their complaining was exposed as they were not upset when one of their own did the same exact thing years before.

What is often ignored is that most of the people coming in for business (consultants, etc.) are billing all those rental car fees, hotel surcharges, etc., back to a Georgia (locality to where they are traveling) client. It's not quite the slam dunk everyone makes it out to be.

Picking a random county, Pulaski won't have a big enough tax base to generate sufficient revenue to provide basic services, which will require a subsidy from ... the state.

I made my decision to not vote for Burt based on conversations I had with two reputable people I know from the Jackson GA area. They weren’t voting for him, or Jackson for that matter. I will gladly vote for Burt if he’s the nominee. If I effed up and Burt loses the primary by 1 vote, you can point to me, I guess. Really by 6 votes because of my family.

Equalization is disgusting.

Dawson County loses about $4m of the $31M property tax revenue to the state. The state then pays "poor counties" like Gwinnett county. Rich vs poor is determined on a per capita basis (dawson county has about 30,000 residents where Gwinnett County is over 1M)

I dont get flustered over primaries.

I didn't vote for Kemp in the primary. He enforced city laws in Athens which restricted resident in homes to family only (preventing college students from participating in free market rent shopping).

I didn't vote for Nathan Deal as he lazily funneled money to his wife as a representative.

If Jackson wins, he might be as good as Kemp and Deal. Who knows. I didn't have a lot of trust for Kemp/Deal either.

So you’re saying renters don’t pay property taxes?
