The civil clerk was elected. She just got new duties attached to her job.

Like a Criminal Sheriff and Civil Sheriff ? It was all just a Patronage scheme, Like NOPSI , the Levee Board, and the Sewage and Water Board.

sorry that your party allegiance prevents you from thinking.
This has nothing to do with party.
There was never any reason for Orleans to have two clerks, and I have zero problem with consolidating the offices under the Civil Clerk’s office.
It’s a state-created office and the way it’s filled and organized is entirely the prerogative of the state legislature. This bill wasn’t a secret and everyone involved knew it was happening.
If you actually care who the CoC is, you’ll have a chance to vote for someone else next time.

And consolidated in 2026... in accordance with the CURRENT Louisiana Constitution.

Do you believe the governor should appoint the Clerk in every parish or just in Orleans?
This question will remain stupid.
Factually, there was no appointment. You are wrong.
If my parish had redundant offices solely for the purpose of enriching career parish workers, I would support consolidation into one clerks office. But of course only New Orleans would have such an asinine and blatantly corrupt setup, so it’s not something any of the rest of us have to contemplate.
And ultimately, I frankly don’t give a shite who stamps pleadings and puts them in the scanner. You shouldn’t either.

Why doesn’t the state appoint clerk of court in every parish? I cannot get anyone to answer this and I genuinely don’t know why the state allows any parish to elect their own clerk.
Competency?

Why are you opposed to New Orleans electing its own Clerk? We elected separate clerks for the separate offices. In response to the election results, the State eliminated the Criminal Clerk. Now there is only one office so we want to elect the person that will assume it. Why are you opposed to that?

New Orleans wants to elect a Clerk of Court now that there is only one clerk. Landry says we aren’t allowed to because he already appointed a clerk for us.
Well, that makes sense.
I’m sure there will be an election coming up.

Factually, you believe voters elected Napoleon to assume the office of Orleans Parish Clerk of Court? You are claiming that is a fact? You are denying there was ever an election for Civil Clerk or Criminal Clerk?

The State is threatening to remove elected officials if we try to have an election.

I know you think you have a "gotcha" with this, but the State did not appoint the clerk of court in Orleans; it simply transferred the functions of the criminal clerk to the civil clerk.
The state legislature is constantly moving the duties of offices around, that does mean that a "new office" is created each time.

I’m not. But you already did.

Just stop pretending like this was some considered interest. I get that you oppose the moves because it’s heavy handed by the state, but just quit the charade that choosing a clerk of court is some considered interest at the heart of Orleans citizens.

It was happening regardless and it was well broadcast as soon as Landry took office.

If the legislature creates a special election for this fake concern, I frankly would not care. But they haven’t, and they don’t have to. I suggest asking nicely instead of trying to exert power the parish doesn’t have over a position it didn’t create.
The redistricting fiasco should give you guys plenty of outrage to foment. But trying this aggressively to cast the elimination of graft and waste as some tyrannical affront to the interests of the electorate, my lady you doth protest too much.

I don't think anyone has said this or anything close to it.

And the person holding that office was elected by the voters of New Orleans.
What you're arguing is that (1) because the legislature expanded the Clerk of Court's duties it resulted in the creation of a "new office" and (2) that the City of New Orleans should be able to call a new election to fill that "new" office, which is wrong on both points. Even if the legislature had created a "new" office the City of New Orleans does not have the authority to call a special election to fill it, only the legislature does.

I’m resisting the urge to make the obvious joke.
I clarified when the offices were established because people seem to be operating under the assumption that the separate offices were created somewhat recently for nefarious purposes.

No, like almost all of Orleans Parish’s governing bodies, it was created long ago for nefarious purposes.

There was never an election for this office because it was just created on April 30.
