"AG Sessions is poised to usher in a rise in the number of imprisoned Americans"

Per the AP
Thoughts?
quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal prison population is on the decline, but a new attorney general who talks tough on drugs and crime and already has indicated a looming need for private prison cells seems poised to usher in a reversal of that trend.
Jeff Sessions, a former federal prosecutor sworn in this month as the country's chief law enforcement officer, signaled at his confirmation hearing — and during private meetings in his first days on the job — that he sees a central role for the federal government in combating drug addiction and violence as well as in strict enforcement of immigration laws.
The result could be in an increase not only in the number of drug prosecutions brought by the Justice Department but also in the average length of sentence prosecutors pursue for even lower-level criminals. If that happens, the resources of a prison system that for years has struggled with overcrowding, but experienced a population drop as Justice Department leaders pushed a different approach to drug prosecutions, could be taxed again.
"Given the rhetoric coming out of the White House and the selection of Sessions as attorney general, an increase in the federal prison population and a chilling effect on state reforms is a very real possibility," said Inimai Chettiar, justice program director at the Brennan Center for Justice.

If he has his way, everyone who smokes a single joint would spend 18 months in prison.

Looking at prison statistics, you would think America has more crime than any other country in the world. Are we really that bad of a people or is our prison system broken? Private prisons are a huge reason. When locking someone up makes someone else money, there are forces at work encouraging imprisonment of Americans that might not necessarily deserve it.

Elections have consequences
And if Trump's admin starts infringing on states' rights to regulate drugs within its borders, then they will be tossed out of office with ease in 2020.

It's amazing how Trump has made libs all for states rights all of a sudden.

Sessions sucks arse and is easily one of the worst decisions Trump has made. Sucks that getting him the AG job was to pay off a campaign debt for southern support.
Sessions better deliver on immigration or he'll be the worst AG ever and I didn't think that was going to be possible after Holder and Lynch.

Agreed
Sessions is one of those old chucklefrick dorks who believes everything should be legislated. He believes in using the federal government to enforce his own personal moral beliefs.

Stout, you know its true.
Legal weed and basically the whole WoD is a political minefield and it's something the Trump Administration would be well served to stay away from as it has bipartisan agreement on. Republicans like Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee have said that legal weed is a state issue, not a federal issue.
There's nothing to gain and everything to lose if they go after it.
High risk, no reward at all.

Didn't Trump say that he believed it should be a state's rights issue? Seems as if this is more on Congress than Trump. Sessions was hired to enforce the law. Change the law to where he can't prosecute and then most everyone will be happy I'd think.
Do you want Trump circumvented the laws on the books to implement personal choices by him. Pretty sure Obama received a helluva lot of flak for doing just that.

Sessions thinks "Reefer Madness" is a documentary.

I agree, Sentrius. I think it would be stupid to reverse any progress made on legal marijuana. Let states individually continue to make those decisions.
