$87 Billion In Covid-19 Unemployment Benefits were paid out to Fraudsters

Unemployment fraud exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the U.S. Labor Department Inspector General’s semiannual report to Congress.
Approximately $872 billion in federal funding was allocated to unemployment benefits in the last year, and at least 10% was estimated to be paid “improperly, with a significant portion attributable to fraud.”
This means that at least $87 billion was lost to fraud, the report said. By contrast, $27.3 billion in total unemployment insurance benefits were paid in 2019, according to the Labor Department.
The major increase in fraud is labeled a “significant” concern by the inspector general.
The watchdog office attributes it to the pandemic economy and the “unprecedented” levels of federal funding for unemployment insurance through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, and other legislation. This “into the UI program gave individuals and organized criminal groups a high-value target to exploit,” according to the report.

There is no accountability anywhere for how our tax dollars are spent. We just keep feeding the beast.

i removed the shocking because it is not shocking
imagine 87 billion dollars going to the upper, middle, lower working classes or to getting black and whites out of the projects and educated in at least a trade.

It wasn't fraud, it was calculated money laundering at extremely high levels.

Very shocking.
But not surprising. Anytime the government starts throwing cash around, there is a line of people ready to steal it, and FedGov doesn't believe in real controls over distribution.

The person who fell for a Nigerian Prince scam in Washington State (head of the Employment Security Department) is now the head of the same organization for *resident Biden.
Talk about failing up.

G-Man always wants his money back.

And it will cost billions more to investigate it all.

Probably more than $87 billion. My good friend received $250k from the PPP and admits he didn’t really need it but with the help of his accountant his small 3 man HVAC company qualified……he remodeled his house with the money.

Whether he “needed” it or not, if it was valid and legal, who has a problem with it?
PPP saved my arse. I have business owner friends whose PPP saved their arse. I have others whose PPP was more like a Christmas bonus.
I don’t have any problems with that.

this isn't terribly surprising to me. i follow a few youtube and instagram accounts that are into inner city crime stuff and lots of hoodlums took A LOT of money from fraudulentPPP loans, stimulus fraud, unemployment scams, etc.
there are so many LLCs registered to addresses in housing projects and shitty apartment complexes. people are selling how to scam classes on instagram.

I'm going to get downvoted to oblivion on this, but much of these federal handouts happened under Trump's watch. He signed on to all this bullshite, and deserves to be held just as accountable to it. I hate the Dems as much as anyone, but we have to hold out own side accountable as well.
This is not a blame Trump thing and certainly not a new phenomenon with Republicans. We need to do better.

It’s what happens when people are in charge of spending other people’s money on other people.
Milton Friedman spoke about this.
1. You spend your own money
2. You spend your own money on other people
3. Someone spends someone else’s money on themselves
4. Someone spends someone else’s money on other people.
A deteriorating cascade of care.
Our government is #4. It’s a simple explanation to why government spending cannot work. And it never can. Simple human nature.
