That's not what I'm talking about. Once you start taking state money you actively invite the vampire into your house.

Then what are you talking about. Many schools aren’t taking it directly for this very reason. The parent applies, the school confirms, the state reimburses the parent’s tuition payment directly. This option is given to schools to not take the money directly and I’d assume is offered in most states doing school choice and not just Florida.

I’m not against vouchers and school choice, but what percentage of Louisiana residents do you think are paying $8,000 a year in property taxes?

Prob not a lot.

But seeing the housing prices in Nola, a good amount there do.

Is this $8000 extra? Or, is it $$ that would follow the student?
IE...the private school gets the money the public would otherwise?

I could support that, as it's cash neutral.

Sort of. But the 100kish students in private school (using La #s) would also get the vouchers. So that that's an $800m expense to the state. That's a lot of money. Even if the vouchers were only $5k that's still $500m. That is a substantial hit to the state budget. Weird thing is, it probably would not hit K-12. More likely hit colleges because their money isn't protected.

We are paying a lot more than $8k in property taxes, and also sending our son to private school because we live in a more rural area and the schools aren’t as good as we would like. $8k isn’t covering tuition, but it would be nice to get some of the more than $20k we paid in property taxes back since our kids are not using the public schools that we are supporting currently.
If you pay 8K in property taxes it won’t matter because you won’t qualify for the voucher. If Louisiana is doing something to help someone I can guarantee it won’t be the people who have worked and sacrificed to make their lives better.

Why would you need school choice vouchers in Texas? He public schools there are better than private schools in Louisiana

Yeah that sucks. Essentially all students qualify for it here now.

You pay $20k per year in property taxes in Louisiana?

I’m in Montgomery County, TX. We have about 30 acres west of Tomball with a couple houses and a barn. I’m planning to rent one of the houses to help cover taxes once I finish renovating it, but property values in the area have doubled in the last 2-3 years and I don’t expect that trend to slow down.

That’s a horrible idea. An open enrollment for public schools is probably the easiest fix.

Louisiana should pass School Choice Vouchers into law and each family get $8,000 also.

Louisiana offers vouchers to low-income families. Why do you think the State is the answer for everything? Why do you want to rely on the State to pay for your kids to attend private school?

until you consider the costs and logistics of busing kids all over the state to attend school.

Why do you want someone who sends their kid to Catholic School to have to pay full price for public school as well as Catholic simultaneously?

For the same reason I want everyone to pay for police and firefighters even though they may not utilize those services in a given year.

but those are public services nobody wants to deny. outside of the left saying "defund the police" nobody is begrudging that money.

people are begrudging education money for a product they don't want or need but have to fund.

again, i'm pro public education. i vote for bonds that are strictly educational (i do vote no on every new Admin building or Athletic Facilities) and contribute to my local ISDs fundraisers even though my kids go to private school.

Do people get $8000 no questions asked or do they actually have to have contributed $8000 in taxes to get the voucher?

If you are a Catholic School, do you want the state interfering in the curriculum? Do you want the state "interested" in your racial makeup, etc.

"You like all that voucher money? Be a shame if you could no longer be eligible to take it.....need more Black students....or Hispanic students..."
We suggest these text books.....if you want to keep the 8K a year per pupil.

There's too much potential for interference by the state.
