I find this hard to believe, smart business owners adapt to change quickly.. I have a couple of customers that are restaurant owners and one of them is expanding b/c he adapted and found new opportunities..the other has been chugging along without letting any staff go..

If it’s anything like my hometown these restaurants aren’t closing because of Covid but because they can’t find servers. Why would someone come to work as a server making $10/hr when they can get an extra $600 week staying at home.

All the good local restaurants are closing up and yet chains like McDonalds or Taco Bell survive like roaches.

You like this plan it seems. Walmarts, Lowes and all the other conglomerates can die in a fire along with big brother and his holding company Big Pharma.

My wife’s companies lease is up in August. They will not be renewing and have figured out how to be lean and mean in her industry moving forward.

I can’t imagine her company is an enigma, I think commercial lease space is the next industry to feel pain.

What are they supposed to do since restaurants are 50% capacity? What restaurant has full staff right now? Not the employee’s fault.

Outside of some very upscale restaurants (New Orleans maybe?), most of the service/hospitality industry people I knew were young folks, college kids looking for spending money, or otherwise young and not yet into something like an industrial/contracter job. These were people who liked the late hours, and liked to party. Waiters, bartenders etc.

Not being mean, but they don't necessarily impact society.

I’ve been cooking professionally since I was 17 years old. My career is hospitality. I don’t agree at all. You’re stereotyping an entire field of work that generates many billions.

There are many millions of people in the restaurant business/hospitality that take their careers incredibly serious. It’s pretty naive for you to think it’s just full of drugged out or drunk kids and morons.

Already seeing it in Nashville.

Just wait until October. Restaurants will be closing like mad and commercial prices will start plummeting.

Most of them have been these millenial hipster restaurants/cafes and I am ok with them shutting down.

A good bit of those here in LFT. It's the main reason I am not spending money at restaurants. Though I've seen the owner of Deanos battling libs on social media, so I bought a pizza Friday.

Can you provide documentation of this?

It's from Yelp.

Granted it's not good, but it's not exactly what the OP says. It's 60% of restaurants that temporarily closed did not open back up:

The review site's latest Local Economic Impact Report, released Wednesday, showed that 60% of the restaurants that temporarily closed due to the pandemic have since shuttered for good.

Heard some economic report on Fox Business News last week say 30% of all small businesses will shutter permanently because of Covid19 hysteria.

The only ones that I know about closing in Mobile are the two Shrimp Basket locations.

The TGIFridays was already closing.

Some businesses have thrived with drive through and take out.

There is a chicken finger place here with about 7 locations, but if you go between 1130-1:30 or 5-7 you are going to be 8-10 cars deep at all times and the inside is still open. The Chick-fil-a is running three drive-thru lanes at around 10-12 deep at all hours of the day.

Half the businesses where I live that went under were already going under. There were too many propped up businesses that were barely surviving. The MAGA I wear I bought online from a company where it was made in China. Covid only fastened the pace of what was already happening. The economy was only working for part of the people. The Obama fed policies of stimulating the market was only going to work for so long. The economy is a mess. We need better leadership to fix it.

Can you link to at least something?

The Appraisal Institute did a webinar in May that estimated 40% of restaurants could close (mom and pop, locals). This was before reopenings and while PPP was still going on.

Give some kind of source when throwing numbers out.

The restaurant spaces in my area have been hit exceptionally hard. At least 25% closure rate - hitting the brew-pubs and bars the hardest. Some of the higher end independent restaurants with a weak takeout game struggled. One local steakhouse that survived the 2009 recession announced a closure but somehow pulled through with different menu for takeout.

Some chains were hit much harder. Chuy’s, Hollihan’s, and Bar Louie all permanently closed a locations around here during Covid. We even lost a Starbucks (with no drive thru) and a Corner Bakery that was always busy before the pandemic.

Chick Fil A, Portillo’s, Raising Cane’s, and McDonalds have been doing well with enhanced drive through setups. Take out Pizza and Chicago style deep dish places are also doing very well - possibly better than before. Lou Malnati’s in particular has had to revamp their parking lot setup for expedited take out.

The local restaurants with outdoor seating have been doing well lately despite having to close for about 10 weeks. The town let a lot of places set up tables on the sidewalk or even in parking areas. It’s worked well for the summer. Winter will hit hard in late October and those places need to be able to completely reopen their dining rooms to survive.

Then there is Chipotle. I don’t even think they noticed the Pandemic. Lines are just as long as ever.

That’s not good for our president.
