I imagine there are a number of Hollywood agents chomping at the bit to sign this WSO so they can negotiate the movie rights.

Is anyone else surprised the wso was a colonel?

Do they typically see live combat?

Has to be a Lt. Colonel. They do fly as they are usually squadron leaders. I have a hard time believing an O6 jumping in the back seat to fly a combat mission.

You know all those dedicated soldiers who train daily were delighted to put all their training to good use and save their brother in arms.

They train and train and train and never know if that training will be needed. Congratulations guys you are all heroes.

After the abject failure of Delta’s first real time mission Iran in the spring of 1980(operation eagle claw) it must be doubly gratifying for them to pull of such an incredibly complex and dangerous mission!

This is typical. He may need to refresh quals depending on his status.

Most want to get “combat sortie” on their record for awards and later use. Afterwards they can claim combat experience, for promotions or even a political career.

He also may have wanted to lead from the front. Some leaders want to show juniors they will do what they order you to do.

Sometimes a pilot may have some struggles and he goes to grade them.

Could be they were short of CWO’s maybe due to illness or other reasons.

There can be lots of reasons. When I was in F-14s the CAG would fly with us. It was an honor because he always chose the squadron with best sortie rate and highest safety rate. We used to rag on our sister squadron that he was afraid to fly with them.

I’m so thankful that he is safe. The survival training that we go is excellent. Glad to see that the training saved his life and kept him out of enemy hands.
